GOSPEL | Matthew 21:33-43, 45-46
Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people:
"Hear another parable.
There was a landowner who planted a vineyard,
put a hedge around it,
dug a wine press in it, and built a tower.
Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey.
When vintage time drew near,
he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce.
But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat,
another they killed, and a third they stoned.
Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones,
but they treated them in the same way.
Finally, he sent his son to them,
thinking, 'They will respect my son.'
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another,
'This is the heir.
Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.'
They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?"
They answered him,
"He will put those wretched men to a wretched death
and lease his vineyard to other tenants
who will give him the produce at the proper times."
Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures:
The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
by the Lord has this been done,
and it is wonderful in our eyes?
Therefore, I say to you,
the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you
and given to a people that will produce its fruit."
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables,
they knew that he was speaking about them.
And although they were attempting to arrest him,
they feared the crowds, for they regarded him as a prophet.

GOING DEEPER
Rejected sons become rejected stones—and rejected stones become cornerstones.
Jesus directs this parable to the chief priests and elders. They immediately recognize the vineyard imagery. Isaiah had already described Israel as the Lord’s carefully tended vineyard—hedge, wine press, tower. This is covenant language. Care. Provision. Expectation.
The landowner withholds nothing necessary for fruitfulness. The tenants are not oppressed; they are entrusted. That word matters. Stewardship always implies accountability.
The servants sent are the prophets—beaten, rejected, silenced. Yet the Father does not stop sending. Divine patience stretches across generations. Finally, He sends His Son. The Greek text sharpens the moment: “They will respect my son.” The parable pauses there, heavy with hope.
But the tenants calculate. “This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.” They want the vineyard without the Father. Authority without obedience. Blessing without surrender. The detail that they throw the son out of the vineyard before killing him echoes Christ’s crucifixion outside the city walls. The parable becomes prophecy.
Then Psalm 118: “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” In ancient construction, the cornerstone aligned the entire structure. Reject it and the building fractures. Accept it and everything holds true. The Kingdom is given not merely to those who claim it—but to those who produce fruit.
This presses deeply into the domestic church. Our homes are vineyards entrusted to us. Grace has been poured out. Sacraments have been given. The Word is proclaimed. The question is not whether God has provided—but whether we are receiving the Son as Lord within our walls. Do we subtly edge Him out while managing the vineyard ourselves?
The Father still sends His Son into our homes. He still expects fruit—justice, mercy, faithfulness, forgiveness, sacrificial love. And the cornerstone still determines whether our family stands or collapses.
Build saint-forming homes by enthroning Christ openly and decisively at the center of your family life, pray over your children by name that they align every choice upon the Cornerstone and never reject Him for lesser inheritances, and act boldly in the power of the Holy Spirit—producing fruit worthy of the vineyard entrusted to you.
“Jesus is ‘the stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the cornerstone.’” (CCC 597)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Where am I trying to enjoy God’s vineyard without fully surrendering to His Son?
In My Home: Is Christ visibly and concretely the cornerstone of our family life?
In My World: What fruit of justice or mercy is God asking me to produce now?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one way you can more intentionally place Jesus at the center of your family this week.
Then pray aloud over each person by name. Place your hand gently upon them and pray over them that they know deeply they belong to Christ, that any temptation to reject His authority is broken in His Holy Name, that lies of self-sufficiency are silenced, and that they be filled with courage to bear visible fruit of love, mercy, and obedience.
Daily Challenge: Choose one concrete action today that publicly and clearly honors Christ as the cornerstone of your home.
