INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Luke 6:39-42
Jesus told his disciples a parable:
“Can a blind person guide a blind person?
Will not both fall into a pit?
No disciple is superior to the teacher;
but when fully trained,
every disciple will be like his teacher.
Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye,
but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?
How can you say to your brother,
‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’
when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye?
You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first;
then you will see clearly
to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.”

GOING DEEPER
Clear Vision for Love
Jesus’ image is humorous and sharp at the same time. Picture it: someone trying to pick out a tiny splinter while a giant wooden beam juts out of their own eye. In first-century Jewish teaching, exaggeration was a common tool for driving home truth. The message is clear—before correcting others, we must confront our own blindness.
The deeper issue here is discipleship. “A disciple is not above the teacher,” Jesus says, “but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher.” The Greek word for “fully trained” (katērtismenos) means restored, put in proper order. To be a disciple is to be conformed to the Teacher—Jesus—so that our vision, judgment, and mercy mirror His. Correction without conversion becomes hypocrisy.
In our homes, this parable lands with real weight. Parents are called to guide, but if our guidance is blind—driven by pride, impatience, or hypocrisy—both we and our children risk falling into the pit. The temptation is constant: to zero in on our children’s flaws without acknowledging our own. Jesus warns us not to lead with blindness, but with humility.
This doesn’t mean ignoring sin. It means beginning with self-examination. When children see us own our faults, ask forgiveness, and turn back to Christ, they learn what real discipleship looks like. Only then can we help them with their “splinters” in a way that heals rather than wounds.
The Feast of the Holy Name of Mary today reminds us of a model of humility and vision. Mary’s “yes” was not clouded by pride but illumined by grace. She sees clearly because she sees through God’s eyes. Parents, if we want to guide with clear sight, we must call upon her intercession, asking for eyes purified by mercy.
What if today we made it our habit to pause before correcting, to examine the “beams” in our own lives, and to pray over our children by name, that their eyes may be opened to Christ’s love? Then, correction flows not from frustration, but from love that restores.
“The way of perfection passes by way of the Cross. There is no holiness without renunciation and spiritual battle” (CCC 2015).
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
Beams and Splinters: What “beam” in my own life might keep me from guiding others clearly?
Family Witness: How can I model humility and repentance in my home before correcting my children?
Clear Sight: Where do I need Mary’s intercession to see myself and others through God’s eyes?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, each person name one way they want to grow in humility and clearer vision.
Then pray over each person by name:
“Lord Jesus, open the eyes of [Name]. Remove every beam of pride, fear, or selfishness that clouds their vision. Fill them with Your mercy, purify their heart, and give them clear sight to love and guide others as You do.”
DAILY PARENT & GRANDPARENT BLESSING
LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
