GOSPEL | Luke 9:18-22
Once when Jesus was praying in solitude,
and the disciples were with him,
he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”
They said in reply, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah;
still others, ‘One of the ancient prophets has arisen.’”
Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Peter said in reply, “The Christ of God.”
He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.
He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly
and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed and on the third day be raised.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Who Do You Say That I Am?
Jesus’ question is the hinge of discipleship: “Who do you say that I am?” The crowds had plenty of opinions—prophet, teacher, even a resurrected John the Baptist. But Peter speaks the truth: “The Christ of God.” Yet even Peter does not yet understand what it means. For Jesus immediately reveals that being the Christ means suffering, rejection, death, and resurrection.
For His first-century disciples, this would have been shocking. They expected a Messiah who would overthrow Rome and restore Israel’s glory. Instead, Jesus describes a Messiah who will be crushed, only to rise in power greater than any earthly kingdom. The Greek word dei—“must”—signals divine necessity. The suffering, death, and resurrection are not accidents; they are God’s saving plan.
This same question comes to us daily: Who do we say Jesus is? If He is merely a good teacher, we may admire Him but avoid the Cross. If He is truly the Christ, we must follow Him into suffering love, trusting that resurrection awaits.
Parents, this question is asked in our homes as well. Our children watch and learn: Who do we say Jesus is by the way we live? Is He Lord of our family’s choices, or just a Sunday figure? Do they see us embrace sacrifice for love, or avoid it at all costs? The credibility of our answer lies not only in words but in witness.
The call is clear: discipleship requires carrying the Cross. Yet this is not a burden of despair, but of hope. When we pray over our children by name, asking that they know Jesus not only as Teacher but as Lord who conquers death, we hand them the only anchor strong enough for life’s storms.
“By his obedience unto death, Jesus accomplished the substitution of the suffering Servant, who makes himself ‘an offering for sin,’ when ‘he bore the sin of many,’ and who ‘shall make many to be accounted righteous’” (CCC 615).
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
Personal Answer: Who do I truly say Jesus is—not in theory, but in the way I live my daily life?
Family Witness: How can I show my children that Jesus is Lord, not just a figure of the past?
Cross and Hope: Where is Jesus inviting me to embrace sacrifice, trusting in His promise of resurrection?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, each person share one way they can answer Jesus’ question—“Who do you say that I am?”—through their actions this week.
Then pray over each person by name:
“Lord Jesus, reveal Yourself to [Name] as the Christ of God. Strengthen them to follow You in sacrifice and love, and fill them with the hope of Your resurrection.”
DAILY PARENT & GRANDPARENT BLESSING
LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
