GOSPEL | John 6:22–29
[After Jesus had fed the five thousand men, his disciples saw him walking on the sea.]
The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea
saw that there had been only one boat there,
and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat,
but only his disciples had left.
Other boats came from Tiberias
near the place where they had eaten the bread
when the Lord gave thanks.
When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there,
they themselves got into boats
and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
And when they found him across the sea they said to him,
“Rabbi, when did you get here?”
Jesus answered them and said,
“Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me
not because you saw signs
but because you ate the loaves and were filled.
Do not work for food that perishes
but for the food that endures for eternal life,
which the Son of Man will give you.
For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.”
So they said to him,
“What can we do to accomplish the works of God?”
Jesus answered and said to them,
“This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
True discipleship begins when we seek Jesus for who He is—not just for what He provides.
Why am I really seeking Jesus right now?
The crowd is searching for Jesus—but not for the reason they think.
They had witnessed a miracle. They had been fed. And now, they are looking for more. On the surface, this seems like devotion. But Jesus sees deeper.
“You are looking for me… because you ate the loaves and were filled.”
This is a piercing moment.
Jesus reveals that it is possible to seek Him—but for the wrong reasons. To follow Him for comfort, provision, or benefit—rather than for relationship and truth.
He redirects them immediately: “Do not work for food that perishes…”
The Greek word for “work” here—ergazesthe—implies striving, investing energy, giving effort. We are all working for something. The question is: what?
Temporary satisfaction—or eternal life?
Jesus introduces a different kind of nourishment. Not bread that fills for a moment, but life that endures forever. And this life is not something we achieve—it is something He gives.
So naturally, they ask: “What can we do?”
We expect a list. A set of actions. A formula.
But Jesus gives a single answer: “This is the work of God, that you believe…”
The word pisteuō again—trust, surrender, entrust your life. The foundation of everything is not what we do for God—but whether we trust and receive His Son.
In family life, this is a crucial distinction.
It is easy to reduce faith to activity—Mass attendance, routines, expectations. These matter. But they are not the center.
The center is relationship.
Do our children see that we love Jesus—or just that we practice religion? Do they see trust, joy, reliance—or obligation and routine?
The domestic church flourishes when belief is alive—when Jesus is not just part of life, but the center of it.
Parents, this Gospel calls you to examine your own heart first. Why are you seeking Jesus? And then to lead your family into deeper relationship—not just external practice.
Make space for encounter. Speak about Jesus personally. Live as people who depend on Him.
And today, pray over your children by name. Ask the Holy Spirit to draw them into true belief—not just knowledge, but living trust. Ask that they would seek Jesus not for what He gives, but for who He is.
Because everything begins there.
“Faith is first of all a personal adherence of man to God.” (CCC 150)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Why am I seeking Jesus—what is truly motivating my faith?
In My Home: How can we grow in relationship with Jesus, not just religious routine?
In My World: How can I help others encounter Jesus personally?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one reason each person wants to follow Jesus.
Then pray together as a family. Parents, place your hands gently on each person and pray over them by name. Ask the Holy Spirit to deepen their faith and draw them into real relationship with Christ. Renounce any superficial or distracted seeking. Pray for sincerity, trust, and love for Jesus.
Daily Challenge: Spend a few minutes today speaking to Jesus personally—not asking for anything, just being with Him.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
