INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Luke 4:16-30
Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, “Is this not the son of Joseph?” He said to them, “Surely you will quote me this proverb, ‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say, ‘Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.’” And he said, “Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But he passed through the midst of them and went away.

The Word can stand in our midst and still be rejected because we think we already know Him.
Where has familiarity in your home dulled the wonder that God is still speaking and still sending?
Jesus returns to Nazareth “according to his custom.” He is not a stranger. He grew up among them. They know His family. They have heard the gracious words. Then the mood turns. The Greek word thaumazō describes their first amazement—wonder mixed with admiration. Within minutes that wonder becomes rage. Why? Because He will not perform on demand, and because He dares to say that God’s mercy has always gone beyond the expected circle: to a Sidonian widow, to a Syrian leper.
The scandal is not that Jesus claims the Isaiah text. The scandal is that He applies it today, and that “today” includes people they would rather keep outside. A prophet is not accepted in his own native place when the native place has already decided what God is allowed to do.
The domestic church faces the same temptation. We can grow so used to one another—spouse, children, the same kitchen, the same pew—that we stop expecting the Spirit to anoint this ordinary house with glad tidings, liberty, and sight. We quote the proverb without knowing it: “Physician, cure yourself.” We want the miracle that confirms our comfort, not the word that sends us toward the poor, the captive, and the one we have written off.
Jesus does not stay to argue. He passes through their midst and goes away. Grace can be refused. The year acceptable to the Lord is still being proclaimed. The only question is whether our homes will receive it or drive it to the edge of the hill.
Parents, build saint-forming homes. Pray over your spouse and children by name. Act in the power of the Holy Spirit so that familiarity becomes holy ground rather than a reason to stop listening.
“Christ’s whole life is a mystery of redemption. Redemption comes to us above all through the blood of his cross, but this mystery is at work throughout Christ’s entire life: already in his Incarnation through which by becoming poor he enriches us with his poverty; in his hidden life which by his submission atones for our disobedience; in his word which purifies its hearers; in his healings and exorcisms by which ‘he took our infirmities and bore our diseases’; in his Resurrection by which he justifies us.” (CCC 517)

In My Heart: Where have I decided I already know what Jesus can or cannot do in my life?
In My Home: How can we keep wonder alive so that those closest to us are not the last to receive God’s word?
In My World: Whom have I quietly placed outside the circle of God’s “today”?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around …
Share one place where familiarity has made it hard to hear God in someone you love. Then pray over your spouse and each person by name, asking the Father to deepen their personal knowledge of His love, free them from every lie of the Enemy, strengthen them against temptation, and fill them with joyful, concrete living of the Gospel.

Speak one word of blessing or encouragement today to the person in your home you are most tempted to take for granted.

LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.
