GOSPEL | Matthew 8:5–11
When Jesus entered Capernaum,
a centurion approached him and appealed to him, saying,
“Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully.”
He said to him, “I will come and cure him.”
The centurion said in reply,
“Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof;
only say the word and my servant will be healed.
For I too am a man subject to authority,
with soldiers subject to me.
And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes;
and to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes;
and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him,
“Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith.
I say to you, many will come from the east and the west,
and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
at the banquet in the Kingdom of heaven.”

GOING DEEPER
Faith That Amazes God
The centurion is one of the most surprising heroes in the Gospel—a Roman military officer, a foreigner, and part of the occupying force. Yet Jesus holds his faith up as the gold standard. In a culture where lineage, ritual purity, and religious belonging defined spiritual credibility, this outsider shows a heart tuned to the truth. He recognizes Jesus’ authority so clearly that his confidence astonishes the Son of God.
The key word in the centurion’s statement is “under authority” (Greek: hyp’ exousian). Ancient listeners knew exactly what he meant: authority flows downward, but only because it is first received. The centurion is saying, in essence, “Jesus, You command sickness the way I command soldiers—Your authority is absolute.” He sees what others miss: Jesus’ word is not advice; it is reality-shaping power.
In our homes, we often forget this. We treat Jesus’ word as optional, inspirational, or negotiable. But the centurion reminds us that the Word of God is not a suggestion. It is the living command of the One whose voice brought galaxies into existence. “Only say the word…” is not poetry. It is a cry of conviction: Your word is enough. Your authority is real. Your promise is certain.
Here is the paradox at the heart of Christian life:
The more we surrender, the stronger we become.
The more we submit to God’s authority, the more His authority moves through us.
The more we admit our unworthiness, the more His power is released.
This is what Jesus “marvels at.” The centurion understands spiritual reality better than the religious experts. He knows that faith is not about feeling—but recognizing who Jesus truly is. Families today need this same clarity. Not faith built on mood, convenience, or cultural drift, but the humble acknowledgment that Christ has real authority over our fears, our wounds, our relationships, and our homes.
Imagine the domestic church shaped by this truth: spouses speaking blessings with confidence in God’s power; parents praying over children knowing the Kingdom moves at Jesus’ word; families surrendered to Christ’s authority with the expectation that heaven responds. This is what makes a home mighty in the Spirit.
Jesus still marvels at such faith. And He still pours out His authority on those who place themselves under it. Let your home become a place where His word is not merely heard but trusted—and where His authority is allowed to heal, direct, and transform.
Parents, build a home where Christ’s authority is honored, His word is lived, and His power is expected. Pray over your spouse and children by name, calling on the Holy Spirit to strengthen them to trust the Lord’s word above every whisper of the Enemy. Let your home become a place where Jesus marvels at your faith.
“Faith is a foretaste of the knowledge that will make us blessed in the life to come.” (CCC 184)

FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share a place in your life where you need Jesus to “only say the word.” Invite each other to pray with honesty and hope.
Then take a moment to pray over each person by name, asking the Holy Spirit to deepen their faith, silence lies of unworthiness, strengthen them against temptation, and fill them with joyful trust in Jesus’ authority.
Daily Challenge: Choose one concrete act of faith today—something small but intentional—that declares your trust in Jesus’ word above fear or self-reliance.
