INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Matthew 12:38-42
Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus,
“Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.”
He said to them in reply,
“An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign,
but no sign will be given it
except the sign of Jonah the prophet.
Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights,
so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth
three days and three nights.
At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah;
and there is something greater than Jonah here.
At the judgment the queen of the south will arise with this generation
and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon;
and there is something greater than Solomon here.”

GOING DEEPER
Faith does not begin when God gives us enough evidence. It begins when we entrust ourselves to the One who has already given us Himself.
What “one more sign” have I been waiting for before fully surrendering my life to Christ?
The scribes and Pharisees ask Jesus for a sign, but their problem is not a lack of evidence. They have witnessed miracles, heard divine wisdom, and encountered Truth Himself standing before them. Their deeper problem is one of disposition. The Greek word for faith, pistis, means far more than intellectual belief. It signifies trust, fidelity, and personal entrustment. They wanted more proof without offering themselves in return. Faith is never merely arriving at certainty; it is entering into covenant.
Jesus points them to Jonah. After three days in the depths, Jonah emerged as a sign calling Nineveh to repentance. Yet Jesus immediately declares that “something greater than Jonah is here.” Jonah reluctantly proclaimed God’s mercy to one city. Christ willingly enters death itself so that every nation might receive eternal life. The sign He offers is not another miracle to satisfy curiosity but His own Death and Resurrection—the definitive revelation of the Father’s love. Every other sign in salvation history points toward this one.
He then speaks of the Queen of Sheba, who journeyed across deserts simply to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Again Jesus says, “something greater than Solomon is here.” Wisdom is no longer merely spoken; Wisdom has become flesh. The eternal Logos, through whom all things were created, now stands among His people. The question is no longer whether God has spoken. The question is whether we are listening. Every time we open the Scriptures, receive the Eucharist, or kneel in prayer, we stand before One infinitely greater than Jonah, Solomon, every prophet, every king, and every teacher who came before Him.
The Church begins this new week with the quiet rhythm of Monday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time. There is something deeply fitting about that. We often imagine that if only God would intervene dramatically, our faith would become stronger. Yet the ordinary Christian life teaches the opposite. Most holiness is forged not through extraordinary signs but through ordinary fidelity: another morning of prayer, another hidden sacrifice, another act of forgiveness, another quiet “yes” to grace. The Resurrection itself continues to unfold in the ordinary moments where Christ is welcomed and obeyed.
This begins in the family. Parents naturally long for dramatic breakthroughs in the lives of their children. Yet God often works like a patient gardener rather than a lightning bolt. Build saint-forming homes by trusting the quiet power of daily faithfulness. Pray over your spouse and children by name. Call daily upon the Holy Spirit. Read the Gospel together. Return faithfully to Sunday Mass. Seek Confession regularly. Your children may forget many conversations, but they will remember a mother and father who quietly believed that Christ was truly present in the ordinary rhythm of family life.
The Pharisees asked for a sign while standing before the Sign. We must not make the same mistake. Christ has already entered history. He has already conquered death. He already dwells among us in His Word, His Church, and above all in the Holy Eucharist. The greatest miracle is not still to come. It has already been given. Every day now becomes an invitation to respond—not with demands for more evidence, but with the joyful surrender of faith.
“Faith is first of all a personal adherence of man to God. At the same time...it is a free assent to the whole truth that God has revealed.” (CCC 150)

Gather together and have each family member share one way they have seen God quietly at work in their lives recently.
Then pray over each person by name. Thank Jesus for the gift of His Death and Resurrection, ask Him to deepen your family’s faith, and invite the Holy Spirit to help each of you recognize Christ’s presence in both the extraordinary and the ordinary moments of life.
Daily Challenge: Instead of asking God for another sign today, thank Him for three signs of His love He has already given you.

We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.
