GOSPEL | Mark 12:1-12
Jesus began to speak to the chief priests, the scribes,
and the elders in parables.
“A man planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it,
dug a wine press, and built a tower.
Then he leased it to tenant farmers and left on a journey.
At the proper time he sent a servant to the tenants
to obtain from them some of the produce of the vineyard.
But they seized him, beat him,
and sent him away empty-handed.
Again he sent them another servant.
And that one they beat over the head and treated shamefully.
He sent yet another whom they killed.
So, too, many others; some they beat, others they killed.
He had one other to send, a beloved son.
He sent him to them last of all, thinking, ‘They will respect my son.’
But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir.
Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’
So they seized him and killed him,
and threw him out of the vineyard.
What then will the owner of the vineyard do?
He will come, put the tenants to death,
and give the vineyard to others.
Have you not read this Scripture passage:
The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
by the Lord has this been done,
and it is wonderful in our eyes?”
They were seeking to arrest him, but they feared the crowd,
for they realized that he had addressed the parable to them.
So they left him and went away.

GOING DEEPER
The greatest tragedy is not rejecting God’s gifts, but rejecting the Giver Himself.
What area of your life have you quietly begun treating as your own possession rather than God’s entrusted vineyard?
Jesus tells a story that would have been unmistakable to His listeners. The vineyard was a familiar image for Israel. God had planted it, protected it, cultivated it, and blessed it. Yet over time the tenants forgot whose vineyard it was. They slowly exchanged gratitude for entitlement and stewardship for ownership.
That temptation remains alive in every generation. Marriage. Family. Talents. Careers. Friendships. Ministries. Even our time. What begins as a gift can subtly become something we grasp as our own. We begin speaking of “my plans,” “my children,” “my success,” or “my future,” forgetting that every good thing ultimately comes from God and belongs to Him.
The Greek concept behind biblical stewardship points to the management of a household entrusted by another. We are caretakers, not owners. The Lord places tremendous gifts in our hands, not so that we can possess them, but so that we can cultivate them and return them to Him bearing fruit. Gratitude grows where ownership dies.
The most chilling part of the parable is the deception. The tenants convince themselves that if they eliminate the son, they can secure the inheritance. Sin always whispers the same lie: “Push God aside and you will become more free.” Yet every attempt to claim God’s place leaves us poorer than before. A soul disconnected from its source cannot flourish. Self-rule eventually becomes self-ruin. Ownership without obedience leads to emptiness.
There is a powerful lesson here for our homes. Parents know the temptation to control outcomes, carry burdens alone, or believe everything depends upon us. Yet our children are first God’s children. Our marriages are His gift. Our homes are meant to be domestic churches where Christ is not merely welcomed as a guest, but honored as Lord. Fruitfulness begins when we surrender again what was never ours to begin with.
Today’s memorial gives us a remarkable witness. Saint Justin Martyr spent years searching for truth through philosophy and reason. When he encountered Christ, he recognized that all truth ultimately converges in Him. Justin did not merely admire Jesus intellectually; he surrendered his life completely, eventually giving it as a martyr. He understood that the vineyard, the inheritance, and even his own life belonged to God.
The rejected stone became the cornerstone. What appeared to be defeat became victory. The same Lord who transformed Calvary into redemption desires to transform our homes, marriages, and families through surrender. Do not merely admire Christ from a distance. Give Him the vineyard. Build saint-forming homes. Pray over your spouse and children by name. Call upon the Holy Spirit daily and lead your family to bear the kind of fruit that will endure for eternity.
“The faithful should live with moderation and confidence in this world, with serenity and in a spirit of poverty. They should use the things of this world as though not engrossed in them, for the form of this world is passing away.” (CCC 2548)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: What gift from God have I begun treating as though it belongs exclusively to me?
In My Home: How can our family better acknowledge that our home, time, and relationships belong first to God?
In My World: What fruit is God asking me to produce for the benefit of others?
FAMILY LIVE IT

Then pray over each person by name. Thank God for the gifts He has placed in their life. Pray that they know deeply how loved they are by Him, that every lie of the Enemy be broken, that they receive strength to resist temptation, and that they joyfully use their gifts to glorify God and bless others.
Daily Challenge: Thank God three different times today for a specific gift you may have begun taking for granted.
