GOSPEL | John 8:1–11
Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area,
and all the people started coming to him,
and he sat down and taught them.
Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman
who had been caught in adultery
and made her stand in the middle.
They said to him,
“Teacher, this woman was caught
in the very act of committing adultery.
Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women.
So what do you say?”
They said this to test him,
so that they could have some charge to bring against him.
Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.
But when they continued asking him,
he straightened up and said to them,
“Let the one among you who is without sin
be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Again he bent down and wrote on the ground.
And in response, they went away one by one,
beginning with the elders.
So he was left alone with the woman before him.
Then Jesus straightened up and said to her,
“Woman, where are they?
Has no one condemned you?”
She replied, “No one, sir.”
Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you.
Go, and from now on do not sin any more.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Jesus meets us in our sin with mercy that restores our dignity and calls us to holiness.
When you fall short, do you run from God in shame—or toward Him in trust?
This Gospel places us in a tense and revealing scene. A woman is dragged into the center of the temple, exposed, humiliated, and condemned. The religious leaders are not truly concerned with justice—they are using her as a trap to test Jesus.
The Greek word used for “accuse” here, kategoria, implies a formal charge meant to condemn. The woman stands not only before her accusers but symbolically before all of us. She represents the human condition—guilty, exposed, and unable to save herself.
Jesus’ response is both mysterious and profound. He bends down and writes on the ground. The only other place in Scripture where God writes with His finger is in the giving of the Law on stone tablets. Many scholars see in this moment a powerful image: the same divine authority that gave the Law is now present, not to condemn, but to fulfill it with mercy.
Then Jesus speaks: “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone.” One by one, the accusers leave. The oldest go first—perhaps because they have lived long enough to know their own sin more deeply.
What remains is one of the most intimate encounters in the Gospel. Jesus and the woman. Mercy and misery. Truth and grace. And Jesus does not deny her sin. He names a new path: “Go, and from now on do not sin any more.”
This is the heart of the Gospel. Mercy is not permission. It is transformation. Jesus restores her dignity and calls her to a new life.
In family life, this dynamic is essential. Every home will encounter failure, weakness, and sin. Harsh judgment wounds deeply. Silence allows patterns to continue. But Christ shows a better way—truth spoken in love, mercy that restores, and a clear call to holiness.
The domestic church becomes a place of healing when we reflect the heart of Christ. Parents model repentance. Spouses extend forgiveness. Children learn that failure is not the end of their story, but an invitation to begin again in grace.
Parents, this Gospel calls us to lead with both mercy and truth. Do not allow shame or harshness to define your home. Speak life. Speak identity. And when correction is needed, do it with the love of Christ. Pray over your children by name, asking the Holy Spirit to free them from sin and form them in holiness. Build a home where mercy leads to transformation and every person knows they are loved and called higher.
“The Gospel is the revelation in Jesus Christ of God’s mercy to sinners.” (CCC 1846)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Where do I struggle to receive God’s mercy or extend it to myself?
In My Home: How can we create a family culture that reflects both truth and mercy?
In My World: Who might God be asking me to treat with greater compassion and understanding today?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share a time when each person experienced forgiveness or needed mercy.
Then pray together as a family. Parents, gently place your hands on each person and pray over them by name. Ask Jesus to reveal His mercy to them personally and break any shame or lies from the Enemy. Pray for strength to resist temptation, courage to choose what is right, and joy in living a life of holiness.
Daily Challenge: Offer forgiveness to someone today or ask for forgiveness where it is needed.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
