GOSPEL | Luke 17:1–6
Jesus said to his disciples,
“Things that cause sin will inevitably occur,
but woe to the one through whom they occur.
It would be better for him if a millstone were put around his neck
and he be thrown into the sea
than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin.
Be on your guard!
If your brother sins, rebuke him;
and if he repents, forgive him.
And if he wrongs you seven times in one day
and returns to you seven times saying, ‘I am sorry,’
you should forgive him.”
And the Apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”
The Lord replied,
“If you have faith the size of a mustard seed,
you would say to this mulberry tree,
‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Faith is measured not by miracles—but by mercy.
Jesus speaks today with a piercing blend of warning and wonder. He begins with the reality that “things that cause sin”—skandala in Greek, meaning stumbling blocks or traps—are inevitable in this fallen world. But woe to those who set them! The gravity of scandal—especially leading “little ones” astray—reveals how seriously Jesus takes the spiritual ecosystem of trust. Our lives are meant to point others toward heaven, not trip them along the way.
Yet the antidote to scandal is not suspicion or judgment—it’s forgiveness. Jesus commands His disciples to forgive seven times a day, a Hebrew idiom for endless mercy. The apostles’ immediate reaction—“Increase our faith!”—shows they realize forgiveness requires divine strength. And here lies the key insight: faith and forgiveness are inseparable.
Faith, even the size of a mustard seed, can move trees and mountains because it roots itself in God’s mercy. The mulberry tree, with its deep, stubborn roots, symbolizes bitterness. Jesus is saying: faith uproots what the human heart cannot. Forgiveness is not a feeling—it’s an act of supernatural trust that God’s justice and love are greater than our wounds.
In our families, this is where faith is tested most. Parents, when you forgive each other quickly and pray together after conflict, you teach your children the shape of divine love. Children, when you say “I’m sorry” and mean it, you open heaven’s gates wider in your home. Mercy multiplies faith; resentment starves it.
The mustard seed is small, but when planted in forgiveness, it grows into a tree that shelters generations.
“Now—this is the hard saying—the heart itself must be converted to God. It is in the heart that sin resides and where faith is born.” (CCC 1430)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
Faith Test: Where is God asking you to forgive someone—not because they deserve it, but because He forgave you first?
Mustard Seed: What step of faith can you take today that uproots bitterness and plants peace in your home or relationships?
Guardrails: Are there areas where your example might lead others toward or away from Christ?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, each name one person (living or past) you need to forgive or ask forgiveness from. Pray together for that grace.
Then pray over one another by name: Lord Jesus, increase [Name]’s faith! Uproot any roots of bitterness, resentment, or pride. Plant Your mercy deep in [Name]’s heart so that our family becomes a living sign of Your forgiveness and love.
DAILY PARENT & GRANDPARENT BLESSING
LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
