GOSPEL | Luke 21:1–4
When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people
putting their offerings into the treasury
and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins.
He said, “I tell you truly,
this poor widow put in more than all the rest;
for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth,
but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”

GOING DEEPER
Love is measured not by amount, but by surrender
Jesus doesn’t simply observe the crowd—He “looks up,” noticing what others overlook. The wealthy drop in gifts impressive to the eye. But His gaze is drawn to a poor widow whose offering seems insignificant. In Greek, her “two small coins” are lepta—the smallest currency, barely worth anything. But in the economy of the Kingdom, her offering outweighs them all because it comes not from surplus, but from sacrifice.
Today’s memorial of Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions—Vietnamese martyrs of the 18th and 19th centuries—shines a powerful parallel. Their offerings were not coins but their lives. They gave out of poverty—the poverty of persecution, fear, danger, and vulnerability—and in that place, they offered everything. Their witness echoes the widow: when the world sees nothing, heaven sees the whole gift.
In the widow’s gesture, Jesus reveals a profound truth: God measures not what we give, but what it costs us to give it. The wealthy give painlessly; the widow gives painfully. Greatness in the Kingdom is not abundance displayed but love emptied. For Jesus, the offering that seems tiny to others shakes heaven when it comes from a heart that trusts God more than security.
Our homes are filled with “two small coin” moments—hidden sacrifices that look like nothing to the world but are enormous to God: a parent waking early to pray, forgiving when hurt, offering patience instead of anger, choosing family time over convenience, speaking blessing when frustrated, listening instead of escaping into a screen. These are the currency of the domestic church.
Often, we feel we have little left to give. We are stretched thin, emotionally drained, financially strained, spiritually weary. And the Enemy whispers: “It’s not enough. You’re not enough.” But Jesus turns that lie inside out. He sees the effort, the struggle, the tears, the quiet faithfulness. He calls it more—not less.
Parents, God is not asking you for perfection—He’s asking for your heart. Tonight, pray over your spouse and children by name, asking God to receive every small gift they offer today, to strengthen them in hidden sacrifices, and to assure them that He sees and treasures every act done in love.
“‘The desire to give and to serve flows from the love of Christ.’” (CCC 1822)

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
