GOD’S DECLARATION TO YOU TODAY
I call you out of self-justification and into love of Me and your neighbor; do this and you will live.
INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Luke 10:25-37
There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test Jesus and said,
“Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law?
How do you read it?”
He said in reply,
“You shall love the Lord, your God,
with all your heart,
with all your being,
with all your strength,
and with all your mind,
and your neighbor as yourself.”
He replied to him, “You have answered correctly;
do this and you will live.”
But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus,
“And who is my neighbor?”
Jesus replied,
“A man fell victim to robbers
as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho.
They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead.
A priest happened to be going down that road,
but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.
Likewise a Levite came to the place,
and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.
But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him
was moved with compassion at the sight.
He approached the victim,
poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them.
Then he lifted him up on his own animal,
took him to an inn, and cared for him.
The next day he took out two silver coins
and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction,
‘Take care of him.
If you spend more than what I have given you,
I shall repay you on my way back.’
Which of these three, in your opinion,
was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?”
He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.”
Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
The mercy God pours into us is meant to become the life we share with others.
How much of your day unfolds with an awareness of God’s loving presence—and how much feels like something you must manage alone?
Many of us know the quiet strain of believing in God while living largely outside an awareness of His love. We pray, then return to carrying everything ourselves. We connect a few religious dots, yet the space between them fills with worry, resentment, and the pressure to prove ourselves. Jesus meets us there. Made by God in His image, sustained by Him, and created for communion with Him, we find our deepest healing as His grace draws our scattered lives into His presence.
The scholar’s question exposes something familiar. He knows the commandment, yet wants to justify himself. We do this when we turn faith into a case we can defend: we have prayed, fulfilled our obligations, avoided certain sins. Those things matter, but we can practice them while keeping our hearts guarded. We can spend exhausting years proving our goodness while resisting the intimacy through which God makes us good. Jesus brings the man back to love—the surrender of the whole person to God, reaching into the way he treats another.
Then comes the surprising turn: Jesus shifts the question from identifying who qualifies as a neighbor to recognizing who became one through mercy. The scholar seeks a boundary; the Samaritan crosses the distance. As Pope Francis explained, this movement reveals the compassion with which God Himself approaches our wounded lives. The Samaritan’s actions give us a way to contemplate Christ: drawing near, tending what is broken, and providing for healing we cannot accomplish alone. We learn to recognize His love by receiving it and participating in it. www.vatican.va
This participation grows through prayer and the sacraments, where Jesus truly encounters us and gives us His grace. Yet we can leave Mass and resume living as though everything depends upon our own strength. The invitation is to carry a receptive heart into the next conversation, the next frustration, the next person needing care. Intimacy deepens as we turn toward Him there: asking for His light, receiving His correction, consenting to His love. Mercy is communion becoming concrete.
Our home is the domestic church, where that communion takes flesh in ordinary relationships. As parents, we know how quickly fatigue can turn a spouse into an obstacle or a child into a problem to solve. Before answering sharply, we can pause and remember: God is present; this person is beloved; His grace is available now. We can listen beneath an adolescent’s defensiveness, take up a task our spouse has carried alone, or acknowledge the hurt in our own tone. Such choices gradually heal our habit of living isolated within ourselves and teach our children where love comes from.
Today’s remembrance of Saint Faustina Kowalska presses this invitation into the heart. The Church’s prayer for her optional memorial joins trust in God’s goodness with generous works of charity. Trust opens us to receive; charity allows what we receive to flow outward. Build saint-forming homes rooted in this living communion. Pray over your spouse and children by name, entrusting their wounds and your own to Jesus. Act in the power of the Holy Spirit, and let the mercy you receive from Christ determine how you approach the person before you today.
“The practice of the moral life animated by charity gives to the Christian the spiritual freedom of the children of God.” (CCC 1828)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Where am I exhausting myself trying to establish my worth instead of receiving God’s love and responding to it?
In My Home: In which recurring household tension could I become more attentive to Christ’s presence before choosing my response?
In My World: Whose suffering might I approach differently if I entered the encounter conscious that Jesus already loves us both?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around … invite each person to describe one moment when they felt alone with something difficult, and one way another person could have helped.
Then pray over each person by name: “Lord Jesus, let [name] personally know Your faithful love in the difficulty they have shared. Silence the Enemy’s lies that they must earn Your care or face their struggles alone. Strengthen them to overcome the temptation to withdraw, lash out, or overlook someone else’s pain. Give them the joy of walking with You and the courage to offer patient attention and practical help tomorrow. Amen.”
Daily Challenge: Before one difficult conversation today, pause to ask Jesus for His love, then give the other person your undivided attention.
