INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Matthew 9:9-13
As Jesus passed by,
he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post.
He said to him, “Follow me.”
And he got up and followed him.
While he was at table in his house,
many tax collectors and sinners came
and sat with Jesus and his disciples.
The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples,
“Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
He heard this and said,
“Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
Go and learn the meaning of the words,
I desire mercy, not sacrifice.
I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

GOING DEEPER
The call does not wait for a cleaner résumé. It finds a man at his post and makes a disciple of him.
Beloved, where have you decided you are too compromised to get up and follow?
A customs post was not a neutral desk. A telōnēs collected Rome’s cut. Neighbors heard collaboration, not career. Jesus does not pass the booth with a lecture. He sees Matthew—and the seeing is already election. Then two words: “Follow me.” Matthew “got up.” The verb can simply mean he stood. In the Gospel’s ear it also carries the sound of rising. He leaves the coins where they sit. The first fruit of the call is not a speech. It is motion.
Then the house opens. Table fellowship in that world was not snacks. To recline with someone was to claim them. The Pharisees see a scandal. Jesus hears a diagnosis. He quotes Hosea 6:6: God desires ḥesed—steadfast mercy—not the performance of sacrifice emptied of love. “I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” The sentence is not an insult to the devout. It is an invitation to the honest.
On this Feast of Saint Matthew, the Church remembers that an evangelist began as a man other people would not eat with. If He called Matthew from the booth, He can call you from whatever post has become your identity.
Parents, build saint-forming homes. Pray over your spouse and children by name. Act in the power of the Holy Spirit by making room at your table today for mercy, not merely for the already respectable.
“Jesus invites sinners to the table of the kingdom: ‘I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.’ He invites them to that conversion without which one cannot enter the kingdom, but shows them in word and deed his Father’s boundless mercy for them and the vast ‘joy in heaven over one sinner who repents.’” (CCC 545)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: What “customs post” have I treated as proof that I cannot be called?
In My Home: Who needs to be seen and welcomed at our table, not discussed from a distance?
In My World: Where is Jesus asking me to prefer mercy to the appearance of sacrifice?

Make some time today to gather together and, going around …
Name one place you feel unworthy—and one way Jesus may be saying “Follow me” there. Then pray over your spouse and each person by name, asking the Father to deepen their personal knowledge of His love, free them from every lie of the Enemy, strengthen them against temptation, and fill them with joyful, concrete living of the Gospel.

Get up from one compromise today and take a single concrete step after Jesus.

LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.
