GOSPEL | Luke 9:46-50
An argument arose among the disciples
about which of them was the greatest.
Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child
and placed it by his side and said to them,
“Whoever receives this child in my name receives me,
and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.
For the one who is least among all of you
is the one who is the greatest.”
Then John said in reply,
“Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name
and we tried to prevent him
because he does not follow in our company.”
Jesus said to him,
“Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”

GOING DEEPER
Greatness in the Kingdom is not the prize at the end of an argument. It is a child placed at Jesus’ side.
Where has the hunger to be first crowded out the people He has already set beside Him?
The Twelve are still warm from glory and mission, and already they are measuring one another. Jesus does not join the debate. Luke says He knew “the intention of their hearts.” Then He does something a father would understand: He takes a paidion—a small child, without rank, without a vote in their contest—and sets the child beside Him. In that world a child was not a mascot of innocence so much as a person with no status. To “receive” such a one—dechomai, to welcome, to take in—was to give honor where the market gave none. “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me.” The small one is not a lesson aid. The small one is the doorway.
John’s protest belongs to the same ache. Someone is working in Jesus’ name outside “our company,” so they try to stop him. The Lord will not let the household become a club. If the work is His, it does not have to wear your badge.
Saint Wenceslaus learned this the hard way in a court full of rivalry: holiness was not winning the room. It was guarding those who could not guard themselves.
You are not being scolded out of your desire to matter. You already matter. That is why He can invite you down. The child at His side is how He tells you what you are worth—and what your home is for.
Parents, build saint-forming homes. Pray over your spouse and children by name. Act in the power of the Holy Spirit by receiving one “least” person today as if you were receiving Christ.
“To become a child in relation to God is the condition for entering the kingdom. For this, we must humble ourselves and become little. Even more: to become ‘children of God’ we must be ‘born from above’ or ‘born of God.’” (CCC 526)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Where am I still arguing for a greatness Jesus is not offering?
In My Home: Whom have we failed to receive because they seemed small, inconvenient, or “not our company”?
In My World: Where is someone serving in Jesus’ name whom we have been too quick to prevent?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around …
Name one person who feels “least” in your world, and one way you will receive them this week. Then pray over your spouse and each person by name, asking the Father to deepen their personal knowledge of His love, free them from every lie of the Enemy, strengthen them against temptation, and fill them with joyful, concrete living of the Gospel.

LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.
