GOSPEL | John 6:16–21
When it was evening, the disciples of Jesus went down to the sea,
embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum.
It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing.
When they had rowed about three or four miles,
they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat,
and they began to be afraid.
But he said to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.”
They wanted to take him into the boat,
but the boat immediately arrived at the shore
to which they were heading.
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Jesus comes to us precisely in the darkness and storms we fear most.
Where in my life do I need to hear Jesus say, “Do not be afraid”?
This Gospel begins with a striking absence: “Jesus had not yet come to them.” The disciples are in the boat, moving forward, doing what they were told—and yet, it is dark, and He is not visibly present.
Then the storm comes.
The Sea of Galilee is known for sudden, violent winds due to its geography. These were not inexperienced men—they were fishermen. And yet, even they are overwhelmed.
This is important.
Following Jesus does not mean avoiding storms. It means encountering Him within them.
Then comes the moment of fear. They see Jesus—but do not recognize Him at first. Instead of comfort, His presence initially brings fear. Why? Because He is doing something beyond their understanding—walking on the very thing that threatens them.
And then He speaks: “It is I.”
In Greek, this is egō eimi—“I AM.” The divine name. This is not just reassurance—it is revelation. The One who stands before them is the same God who spoke to Moses from the burning bush.
“I AM… do not be afraid.”
Fear begins to dissolve not because the storm stops, but because of who is present.
And then something remarkable happens. “They wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat arrived at the shore.”
When Jesus is received, the destination is reached.
In our lives, we often focus on the storm—trying to manage it, control it, survive it. But the Gospel shifts the focus. The question is not how strong the storm is.
The question is whether we recognize and receive Christ within it.
Family life is full of storms—uncertainty, stress, conflict, fear for our children, pressures we did not anticipate. There are moments when it feels like we are rowing in the dark.
And sometimes, it can feel like Jesus has not yet come.
But He is nearer than we realize.
Parents, this Gospel calls you to lead with faith in the midst of the storm. Do not let fear take root. Speak truth. Anchor your home in the presence of Christ.
And today, pray over your children by name. Ask the Holy Spirit to drive out fear, to strengthen their trust, and to help them recognize Jesus even when life feels uncertain or overwhelming.
Let them hear you say it.
“It is I… do not be afraid.”
Because when Jesus is welcomed into the boat—
everything changes.
“In faith, man freely commits his entire self to God.” (CCC 1814)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Where is fear present in my life, and am I inviting Jesus into it?
In My Home: How can we respond to challenges with faith instead of fear as a family?
In My World: Who needs to be reminded that they are not alone in their storm?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one fear or challenge each person is facing right now.
Then pray together as a family. Parents, place your hands gently on each person and pray over them by name. Ask Jesus to enter into their fears and bring peace. Renounce any anxiety, lies, or discouragement from the Enemy. Pray for courage, trust, and confidence in God’s presence.
Daily Challenge: When fear arises today, pause and say aloud: “Jesus, I trust You. You are with me.”

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
