INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Matthew 14:1-12
Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus
and said to his servants, “This man is John the Baptist.
He has been raised from the dead;
that is why mighty powers are at work in him.”
Now Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison
on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,
for John had said to him,
“It is not lawful for you to have her.”
Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people,
for they regarded him as a prophet.
But at a birthday celebration for Herod,
the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests
and delighted Herod so much
that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.
Prompted by her mother, she said,
“Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
The king was distressed,
but because of his oaths and the guests who were present,
he ordered that it be given, and he had John beheaded in the prison.
His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl,
who took it to her mother.
His disciples came and took away the corpse
and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.

GOING DEEPER
Courageous love tells the truth and remains faithful to God when compromise would seem easier.
Where is God asking us to choose truth with love rather than surrender to pressure, fear, or the desire for approval?
This Gospel is sobering because it shows what can happen when desire, pride, and public pressure rule the heart. Herod knows that John is a prophet. He is distressed by the request before him. Yet his fear of losing face before his guests proves stronger than his willingness to do what is right. A weak yes can become a devastating no.
John the Baptist, by contrast, speaks the truth even though it costs him. He does not seek conflict, nor does he bend the truth to preserve his own safety. His witness reminds us that real love never abandons another person to a lie. Truth without love can wound; love without truth can wander. But truth spoken in love sets people free.
The domestic church is where this courage is first learned. We teach it when we refuse to let anger or manipulation set the tone of our home; when we speak honestly and respectfully to one another; when we safeguard purity, fidelity, and the dignity of every person; and when we acknowledge our own sins rather than excuse them. Children need to see that holiness is not harshness—it is love strong enough to stand.
Saint Alphonsus Liguori spent his life helping ordinary people discover both the seriousness of sin and the astonishing mercy of God. A brilliant lawyer before becoming a priest, he knew how easily fear and confusion can burden the conscience. He became a doctor of the Church because he taught souls to trust Christ, embrace the truth, and never despair of God’s compassion.
The Enemy loves to make compromise sound reasonable: “Do not make things difficult.” “Keep everyone happy.” “It is only one small concession.” But every choice forms us. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is faith refusing to let fear sit in the driver’s seat. The cost of compromise is always greater than the cost of courage.
Stand with John. Build saint-forming homes, pray over your children by name, and act in the power of the Holy Spirit so that your family may love truth, reject the Enemy’s lies, and live with the courageous freedom of Christ.
“Fortitude is the moral virtue that ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of the good. It strengthens the resolve to resist temptations and to overcome obstacles in the moral life. The virtue of fortitude enables one to conquer fear, even fear of death, and to face trials and persecutions. It disposes one even to renounce and sacrifice his life in defense of a just cause.” (CCC, 1808)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Where am I tempted to compromise because I fear criticism, discomfort, or the loss of approval?
In My Home: How can we speak more truthfully, patiently, and lovingly with one another?
In My World: What good and necessary truth is God asking me to uphold with greater courage today?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around … invite each person to share about a time when it was difficult to do the right thing and what helped them choose it.
Then pray over each person by name. Ask the Father to let them know deeply that they are loved, to free them from every lie and influence of the Enemy, to strengthen them against temptation, and to give them joyful courage to live the Gospel when it is costly. Ask the Holy Spirit to make your family steadfast in truth and rich in mercy.
Daily Challenge: Choose one difficult but loving act of honesty today instead of avoiding it.

LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.
