INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Mark 6:17-29
Herod was the one who had John the Baptist arrested and bound in prison
on account of Herodias,
the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married.
John had said to Herod,
“It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
Herodias harbored a grudge against him
and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so.
Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man,
and kept him in custody.
When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed,
yet he liked to listen to him.
She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday,
gave a banquet for his courtiers,
his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee.
Herodias’ own daughter came in
and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests.
The king said to the girl,
“Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you.”
He even swore many things to her,
“I will grant you whatever you ask of me,
even to half of my kingdom.”
She went out and said to her mother,
“What shall I ask for?”
She replied, “The head of John the Baptist.”
The girl hurried back to the king’s presence and made her request,
“I want you to give me at once
on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
The king was deeply distressed,
but because of his oaths and the guests
he did not wish to break his word to her.
So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders
to bring back his head.
He went off and beheaded him in the prison.
He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl.
The girl in turn gave it to her mother.
When his disciples heard about it,
they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

GOING DEEPER
The truth costs—and the one who speaks it may lose everything except the only thing that matters.
Where in our homes or culture are we tempted to soft-pedal the truth in order to keep the peace or protect our comfort?
John the Baptist did not die for a complicated theological argument. He died for a clear moral truth spoken to power: “It is not lawful.” Herod knew John was righteous and holy. He even liked to listen to him. Yet when the moment of decision came, Herod valued the opinion of his guests and the weight of his own rash oath more than the voice of God. The banquet of the world demanded a head on a platter, and the prophet paid the price.
This is the pattern of every age. The world will tolerate religion as long as it remains private, polite, and non-confrontational. The moment truth touches real relationships, real power, or real sin, the knives come out. John shows us that the forerunner of Christ must also prepare the way of the Cross.
Saint John the Baptist stands as the first great witness after the Old Covenant—martyred not for preaching the name of Jesus explicitly, but for refusing to call evil good. His blood is the seed of the New Covenant’s courage.
In the domestic church the same battle plays out on a quieter scale. Parents who refuse to redefine marriage, who insist on the dignity of every child, who name sin as sin while still loving the sinner, will feel the pressure. Children who choose purity when the culture mocks it will feel the cost. The temptation is always the same: keep the peace, avoid the scene, stay quiet so the banquet can continue.
Yet the door of the Kingdom is opened by those who speak truth in love, even when it costs them. The disciples came and took John’s body and laid it in a tomb. They honored the witness. Heaven does the same.
Parents, build saint-forming homes. Pray over your children by name. Act in the power of the Holy Spirit by forming hearts that will choose truth over comfort when the moment comes.
“Martyrdom is the supreme witness given to the truth of the faith: it means bearing witness even unto death. The martyr bears witness to Christ who died and rose, to whom he is united by charity. He bears witness to the truth of the faith and of Christian doctrine.” (CCC 2473)

In My Heart: Where have I chosen silence or compromise rather than the clear word of truth?
In My Home: How can we help one another grow in the courage to speak truth with both clarity and charity?
In My World: Is there a situation right now where I am being asked to call something “lawful” that God has called unlawful?

Make some time today to gather together and, going around …
Share one place where truth is currently under pressure in your life or culture. Then pray over each person by name, asking the Father to deepen their personal knowledge of His love, free them from every lie of the Enemy, strengthen them against temptation, and fill them with joyful, concrete living of the Gospel.

Speak one clear, charitable word of truth today in a place where silence would be easier.

LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.

I was recently taught that a "martyr" is anyone who refuses to call evil good, whether he or she is killed for it or not. I have such admiration for those who stand "in the day" (Ephesians 6) and survive, as well. They risk death, or cancelling, or loss of job, etc., but it doesn't happen BECAUSE they stood firm. Let's all just stand firm and see what happens.
