INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Matthew 20:20-28
The mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons
and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.
He said to her,
"What do you wish?"
She answered him,
"Command that these two sons of mine sit,
one at your right and the other at your left, in your Kingdom."
Jesus said in reply,
"You do not know what you are asking.
Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?"
They said to him, "We can."
He replied,
"My chalice you will indeed drink,
but to sit at my right and at my left, this is not mine to give
but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."
When the ten heard this,
they became indignant at the two brothers.
But Jesus summoned them and said,
"You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,
and the great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it shall not be so among you.
Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served
but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."

GOING DEEPER
In God’s Kingdom, the road to glory always passes through the Cross.
What picture of greatness is quietly shaping my life—the world’s pursuit of recognition, or Christ’s invitation to self-giving love?
The request of the mother of James and John almost makes us smile. Like every loving parent, she desires the very best for her sons. Yet she imagines the Kingdom in earthly terms: positions of honor, influence, and prestige. The irony is profound. As she asks for thrones, Jesus is already walking toward Calvary. His crown will be woven from thorns. His throne will be a Cross. His royal procession will lead to Golgotha. The Kingdom they seek is real—but it is reached by a road they do not yet understand.
Jesus asks a searching question: “Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?” Throughout Scripture, the chalice symbolizes one’s divinely appointed share or destiny. Christ’s chalice is the complete offering of Himself to the Father in love. James confidently replies, “We can,” without fully grasping the cost. Yet Jesus accepts his answer. Grace would eventually accomplish what youthful enthusiasm could not. Years later, James would indeed drink that chalice, becoming the first of the Apostles to give his life in martyrdom (Acts 12:2). God’s call often begins beyond our understanding and matures through faithful perseverance.
This is precisely why today’s Feast of St. James, Apostle is so compelling. James was one of the “Sons of Thunder”—passionate, ambitious, and impulsive. Christ did not reject those qualities; He purified them. The fire that once sought places of honor became the courage to lay down his life for the Gospel. Holiness rarely requires God to erase our personality. More often, He redeems it, directing our strengths toward love rather than self.
Jesus then overturns every worldly understanding of authority: “Whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant.” The Greek word diakonos—servant—is the root of our word “deacon,” one who ministers to others. Christian authority is never domination but participation in Christ’s own self-emptying love. The Son of God reveals His glory not by demanding service but by washing feet, embracing the Cross, and pouring out His life for the salvation of the world. To reign with Him is first to serve with Him.
This begins in the home. Every family presents countless hidden opportunities to choose Christ’s definition of greatness: changing another diaper, listening patiently after a long day, forgiving before being asked, preparing another meal, offering another prayer, carrying another burden without complaint. These quiet acts are not interruptions to holiness—they are its ordinary school. Build saint-forming homes where love is measured not by recognition but by sacrifice. Pray over your spouse and children by name. Call daily upon the Holy Spirit. Teach your family that true greatness is discovered not by climbing above others, but by kneeling beside them.
James desired a seat beside Christ in glory. In the end, he received something infinitely greater: a share in Christ’s very life. The same invitation stands before each of us today. We need not fear the chalice Christ offers, for He never asks us to drink it alone. Every Cross embraced in love becomes a pathway to Resurrection. Every act of humble service allows the King of Glory to live more fully within us.

In My Heart: Where am I still seeking recognition instead of faithfulness?
In My Home: What hidden act of loving service is Christ inviting me to embrace today?
In My World: How can I exercise influence through humility rather than through control?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Gather together and ask each family member: “What is one quiet act of service someone in our family has done recently that made you feel loved?”
Then pray over each person by name. Ask the Holy Spirit to form in each of you the humble heart of Christ. Through the intercession of St. James, Apostle, pray for the courage to follow Jesus faithfully, whether the road leads through joy, sacrifice, or both.
Daily Challenge: Perform one meaningful act of service today that no one else may ever notice. Offer it entirely for the love of Christ.

LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.
