GOSPEL | Matthew 8:5-17
When Jesus entered Capernaum,
a centurion approached him and appealed to him, saying,
“Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully.”
He said to him, “I will come and cure him.”
The centurion said in reply,
“Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof;
only say the word and my servant will be healed.
For I too am a man subject to authority,
with soldiers subject to me.
And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes;
and to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes;
and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him,
“Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith.
I say to you, many will come from the east and the west,
and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
at the banquet in the Kingdom of heaven,
but the children of the Kingdom
will be driven out into the outer darkness,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.”
And Jesus said to the centurion,
“You may go; as you have believed, let it be done for you.”
And at that very hour his servant was healed. Jesus entered the house of Peter,
and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.
He touched her hand, the fever left her,
and she rose and waited on him. When it was evening, they brought him many
who were possessed by demons,
and he drove out the spirits by a word and cured all the sick,
to fulfill what had been said by Isaiah the prophet: He took away our infirmities and bore our diseases.
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Faith is trusting God’s power before seeing the results.
Where is God inviting you to trust His word more deeply, even before circumstances change?
Today’s Gospel presents one of the most remarkable examples of faith in all of Scripture. A Roman centurion—a Gentile, an outsider to Israel’s covenant—approaches Jesus with extraordinary confidence. His servant is suffering, and he believes that Christ can heal him. Yet what amazes Jesus is not merely the man’s belief in His power. It is the depth of his trust.
The centurion understands authority. As a military commander, he knows that when a person with authority speaks, things happen. Orders are carried out. Reality changes. So he tells Jesus, “Only say the word and my servant will be healed.” He believes that Christ’s authority extends beyond physical presence. A single word from Jesus is enough.
This is why the Church places those words on our lips before receiving the Eucharist: “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word...” Every Mass invites us into the same posture of humility and trust. We acknowledge our need and place our confidence not in ourselves but in Christ.
Notice also that the centurion comes not for himself but for another. His faith is intercessory. He carries someone else’s suffering to Jesus. This is one of the great privileges of the Christian life. We are invited to bring the needs of our spouses, children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors, and even strangers before the Lord. Prayer is an act of love.
The Gospel then moves rapidly through several healings. Peter’s mother-in-law is healed. The sick are healed. Demons are cast out. Matthew wants us to see something important: Jesus does not merely teach truth; He brings restoration. He enters into human brokenness and begins making all things new.
Yet healing itself points to something even deeper. Christ came not only to heal bodies but to heal souls. Physical illness reminds us of a greater human need—the need for redemption. Every miracle ultimately reveals the heart of a Savior who desires wholeness for His people.
This truth has profound implications for family life. Families carry countless concerns—health challenges, strained relationships, financial burdens, prodigal children, anxieties about the future. Build saint-forming homes by becoming households of intercession. Pray over your spouse and children by name. Call daily upon the Holy Spirit. Bring every need to Jesus with the confidence of the centurion, trusting that His word remains powerful and His love remains faithful.
The centurion never saw Jesus enter his home. He simply trusted. Sometimes that is exactly what faith looks like for us as well.
“Faith is certain. It is more certain than all human knowledge because it is founded on the very word of God.” (CCC 157)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: What situation am I struggling to entrust fully to Christ?
In My Home: How can our family become more intentional about praying for one another’s needs?
In My World: Who is God inviting me to carry before Him in prayer today?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one prayer intention you would like the family to bring before God.
Then pray over each person by name. Ask the Lord to strengthen their faith, deepen their trust, and meet every need according to His wisdom and love. Pray that they reject fear, persevere in hope, and confidently entrust their lives to Christ.
Daily Challenge: Pray specifically for one person today who is facing a difficult burden, and let them know you are praying for them.
DAILY PARENT & GRANDPARENT BLESSING

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
