GOD’S DECLARATION TO YOU TODAY
My truth will divide hearts, but those who listen for My voice will find life.
INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | John 7:40–53
Some in the crowd who heard these words of Jesus said,
“This is truly the Prophet.”
Others said, “This is the Christ.”
But others said, “The Christ will not come from Galilee, will he?
Does not Scripture say that the Christ will be of David’s family
and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”
So a division occurred in the crowd because of him.
Some of them even wanted to arrest him,
but no one laid hands on him.
So the guards went to the chief priests and Pharisees,
who asked them, “Why did you not bring him?”
The guards answered, “Never before has anyone spoken like this man.”
So the Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived?
Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?
But this crowd, which does not know the law, is accursed.”
Nicodemus, one of their members who had come to him earlier, said to them,
“Does our law condemn a man before it first hears him
and finds out what he is doing?”
They answered and said to him,
“You are not from Galilee also, are you?
Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”
Then each went to his own house.
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
The words of Jesus reveal the truth of our hearts and force us to choose where we stand.
When you hear the voice of Jesus, do you move closer to Him or quietly step away?
This Gospel captures a moment of intense division surrounding Jesus. The crowd is wrestling with the same question every generation must eventually face: Who is this man? Some believe He is the Prophet promised by Moses. Others declare He must be the Christ. Still others dismiss Him because they think they know His background.
Ironically, the skeptics in the crowd misunderstand the very Scriptures they claim to defend. They insist the Messiah must come from Bethlehem, not realizing that Jesus was indeed born there. Their assumptions about Him prevent them from discovering the truth standing right before them.
One of the most striking lines in the passage comes from the temple guards sent to arrest Jesus. Instead of capturing Him, they return empty-handed and say, “Never before has anyone spoken like this man.” Even hardened guards recognize something extraordinary in the voice of Christ.
Meanwhile, the religious leaders react defensively. They appeal to authority and status rather than truth. Their argument is essentially this: none of the powerful believe in Him, therefore He must be wrong. This is a powerful warning about how pride can blind even the most religious people.
Nicodemus quietly stands up in the middle of this hostile environment. Earlier in John’s Gospel he came to Jesus at night, searching for truth. Here he takes a cautious but meaningful step of courage, reminding the council that the law requires a fair hearing before judgment.
In our own time the presence of Jesus still creates division. His words challenge comfort, expose hypocrisy, and call people to repentance and faith. Some welcome Him with open hearts. Others dismiss Him because His truth disrupts their assumptions.
Our homes are not immune to this tension. Children grow up in a world filled with competing voices about truth, identity, and morality. Parents face the task of helping them discern which voice leads to life.
The domestic church becomes a place of clarity when families intentionally center themselves on Christ. His word is read. His truth is spoken. His mercy is practiced. In this environment children learn that the voice of Jesus carries authority unlike any other voice in the world.
Parents, this Gospel calls us to courageous witness. Like Nicodemus, be willing to stand for truth even when the culture pushes the other way. Speak the words of Christ in your home. Pray over your children by name. Ask the Holy Spirit to give them the courage to recognize and follow the voice of Jesus wherever it leads.
“Man’s response to God by faith must be free, and therefore nobody is to be forced to embrace the faith against his will.” (CCC 160)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: When the teachings of Jesus challenge me, do I resist them or allow them to transform me?
In My Home: How can our family become a place where Christ’s truth is clearly heard and lived?
In My World: Where might God be asking me to stand courageously for truth like Nicodemus?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one teaching of Jesus that challenges each of you to grow.
Then pray together as a family. Parents, place your hands on each person and pray over them by name. Ask Jesus to help them recognize His voice above every other voice in the world. Renounce any lies or confusion planted by the Enemy. Pray that each person will grow in courage to follow Christ faithfully and live the Gospel with joy.
Daily Challenge: Choose one saying of Jesus today (for example from the Sermon on the Mount) and commit to living it intentionally as a family.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
