INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | John 21:20-25
Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved,
the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper
and had said, “Master, who is the one who will betray you?”
When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?”
Jesus said to him, “What if I want him to remain until I come?
What concern is it of yours?
You follow me.”
So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die.
But Jesus had not told him that he would not die,
just “What if I want him to remain until I come?
What concern is it of yours?”
It is this disciple who testifies to these things
and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true.
There are also many other things that Jesus did,
but if these were to be described individually,
I do not think the whole world would contain the books
that would be written.
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Comparison distracts us from the unique mission Christ has given each of us.
How much of your anxiety, frustration, or insecurity comes from comparing your path to someone else’s?
Peter has just been restored by Jesus and entrusted with leadership. Yet almost immediately, he turns and asks: “Lord, what about him?” It is one of the most relatable moments in Scripture. Even after encountering Christ deeply, the temptation remains to compare, measure, and evaluate ourselves against others.
Jesus responds sharply but lovingly: “What concern is it of yours? You follow me.” In other words: Peter, stay focused on your mission, not someone else’s. Comparison clouds calling.
This temptation is everywhere today. Social media constantly invites us to measure our lives against curated versions of others: their success, appearance, family, influence, vacations, spirituality, or accomplishments. We quietly ask: Why is their life easier? Why are their gifts greater? Why is their path different? But comparison slowly corrodes gratitude and blinds us to the unique work God is doing in us.
The Greek behind “follow” here is akoloutheō—to accompany, walk behind, remain joined to. Christianity is not competition; it is communion with Christ through fidelity to our own path of discipleship. Faithfulness matters more than comparison-driven performance.
And notice something beautiful: Jesus gives different missions to Peter and John. Peter will glorify God through martyrdom and leadership. John through witness, contemplation, and testimony. Different vocations. Same Lord. The Kingdom of God flourishes not through uniformity, but through faithful diversity rooted in Christ.
This has enormous implications for family life. Parents can easily compare children, marriages, careers, gifts, struggles, or stages of life. But every person carries a unique calling and pace of growth. Healthy homes cultivate gratitude for God’s individual design instead of constant comparison and pressure.
The Gospel also ends with breathtaking wonder: “the whole world would not contain the books.” John recognizes that even after writing his Gospel, the fullness of Christ remains inexhaustible. Jesus is not a concept to master—He is an infinite mystery to encounter. Awe expands where comparison diminishes.
Today, stop obsessing over someone else’s road. Jesus is speaking directly to you: “You follow me.” Parents, teach your children to celebrate others without losing sight of their own God-given identity and mission. Pray over your children by name for freedom from envy, insecurity, and unhealthy comparison. And remember: God is not asking you to become someone else—He is asking you to follow Him faithfully as the person He created you to be.
“Spiritual progress tends toward ever more intimate union with Christ.” (CCC 2014)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Where am I most tempted to compare myself to others instead of trusting God’s plan for my life?
In My Home: How can we better affirm and celebrate the unique gifts and calling of each person in our family?
In My World: Who can I genuinely encourage today instead of quietly competing with or envying them?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around … share one unique gift or strength you see in another person in the family.
Then pray together as a family. Lay hands on each person and pray over them by name:
“Jesus, help [Name] follow You faithfully without fear, envy, or comparison. Teach them to trust the unique mission You have given them. Fill them with gratitude, confidence, humility, and joy in who You created them to be.”
Pray for deep trust in God’s plan, freedom from insecurity and comparison, strength to remain faithful to Christ’s call, and joyful gratitude for each person’s unique gifts and vocation.
Daily Challenge: Encourage someone today by sincerely affirming a gift, strength, or virtue you see in them.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
