GOSPEL | Luke 9:43b-45
While they were all amazed at his every deed,
Jesus said to his disciples,
"Pay attention to what I am telling you.
The Son of Man is to be handed over to men."
But they did not understand this saying;
its meaning was hidden from them
so that they should not understand it,
and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

GOING DEEPER
Glory and the Cross—Two Sides of One Mystery
The disciples were caught in amazement at Jesus’ miracles. They saw power, healing, and authority—signs of a triumphant Messiah. Yet Jesus interrupts their awe with a shocking announcement: “The Son of Man is to be handed over.” The Greek word here, paradidomi, means “to be delivered up, betrayed, or handed over.” It foreshadows not only Judas’ betrayal but the Father’s mysterious plan of redemption through suffering.
For the disciples, this was incomprehensible. How could glory and suffering coexist? How could the One who casts out demons and commands the sea be vulnerable to betrayal and death? Their silence—“afraid to ask him”—reveals the tension we all feel when the Cross confronts our expectations of God.
And yet, the same paradox confronts us in family life. We long for joy, harmony, and miracles—but we are handed the Cross: misunderstandings, sickness, financial strain, brokenness in our children, tensions in marriage. Like the disciples, we are tempted to shrink back, to remain silent in confusion.
But here’s the mystery: glory is revealed through the Cross, not apart from it. The very moments that seem most hidden or painful can become the soil of resurrection. In our homes, the “handing over” often takes the form of daily sacrifice—handing over our comfort, our will, our desire to control. Parents especially are called to embrace this handing over in love, trusting that God is at work even when we cannot see it.
Do not fear what you cannot yet understand. Instead, cling to Jesus in faith. Let your children see you take the Cross seriously—not with bitterness, but with hope. And today, pray over your children by name, asking the Holy Spirit to open their hearts to this mystery: that true greatness is not found in avoiding the Cross, but in carrying it with Christ, who transforms it into glory.
“By his obedience unto death, Jesus accomplished the substitution of the suffering Servant, who makes himself ‘an offering for sin,’ when ‘he bore the sin of many,’ and who ‘shall make many to be accounted righteous’” (CCC 615).
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
Fear and Silence: Where am I tempted to avoid asking Jesus about the hard things, out of fear of what His answer might require?
Cross in the Home: What are the “hidden Crosses” in my family life right now that God may be using to reveal His glory?
Witness to Children: How can I show my children that suffering embraced in love is not defeat, but the pathway to resurrection?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, name one “hard thing” you are facing right now. After listening, pray over each person by name:
“Lord Jesus, strengthen [Name] to embrace their Cross with You. May Your Spirit transform their struggle into glory and their fear into trust.”
DAILY PARENT & GRANDPARENT BLESSING
LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
