I am walking with you—even when you do not recognize Me.
INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Luke 24:13–35
That very day, the first day of the week,
two of Jesus’ disciples were going
to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus,
and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred.
And it happened that while they were conversing and debating,
Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,
but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
He asked them,
“What are you discussing as you walk along?”
They stopped, looking downcast.
One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply,
“Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem
who does not know of the things
that have taken place there in these days?”
And he replied to them, “What sort of things?”
They said to him,
“The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene,
who was a prophet mighty in deed and word
before God and all the people,
how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over
to a sentence of death and crucified him.
But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel;
and besides all this,
it is now the third day since this took place.
Some women from our group, however, have astounded us:
they were at the tomb early in the morning
and did not find his body;
they came back and reported
that they had indeed seen a vision of angels
who announced that he was alive.
Then some of those with us went to the tomb
and found things just as the women had described,
but him they did not see.”
And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are!
How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!
Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things
and enter into his glory?”
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets,
he interpreted to them what referred to him
in all the Scriptures.
As they approached the village to which they were going,
he gave the impression that he was going on farther.
But they urged him, “Stay with us,
for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.”
So he went in to stay with them.
And it happened that, while he was with them at table,
he took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, and gave it to them.
With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him,
but he vanished from their sight.
Then they said to each other,
“Were not our hearts burning within us
while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?”
So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem
where they found gathered together
the eleven and those with them who were saying,
“The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!”
Then the two recounted
what had taken place on the way
and how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread.
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Jesus meets us in our confusion, walks with us, and reveals Himself in Word and Sacrament.
Where might Jesus already be walking with me—even though I have not recognized Him?
These two disciples are walking away.
This is the first thing to notice. They are leaving Jerusalem—the place of promise, the place where everything just happened. They are discouraged, confused, and disillusioned. “We were hoping…” Their hope has collapsed.
And yet—Jesus draws near.
He does not wait for them to return. He meets them on the road, in their confusion, in their disappointment. This is the heart of God. He pursues us even when we are moving in the wrong direction.
But “their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.”
Why? Because their expectations are blocking their vision. They expected a different kind of Messiah—one who would conquer, not suffer. Their understanding is too small for what God has actually done.
So Jesus begins to teach.
“Beginning with Moses and all the prophets…” He reveals that the Cross was not a failure—it was the plan. The Greek word used when He “interpreted” the Scriptures is diermēneuō—to unfold, to explain deeply. He is opening not just the Scriptures, but their hearts.
And something begins to change.
“Were not our hearts burning within us…”
This is what happens when truth meets the soul. It ignites something. It awakens.
But they still do not fully see—until the table.
“He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them.” This is unmistakably Eucharistic language. And in that moment—“their eyes were opened.”
Word leads to Sacrament. Understanding leads to encounter.
Then He vanishes.
Why? Because now they know how to find Him.
And what do they do? They immediately turn around. They go back. They run to share the news. Encounter leads to mission.
This is the pattern of the Christian life.
In family life, this journey happens constantly. There are moments of confusion, disappointment, unmet expectations. Times when we feel like we are walking away, even subtly.
But Jesus is there.
Walking with us. Speaking to us. Inviting us to recognize Him.
Parents, this Gospel is a powerful call. Your home is meant to be Emmaus—a place where hearts burn, where Scripture is opened, where Christ is encountered in real and tangible ways.
Do your children see that? Do they experience that?
Bring the Word into your home. Make the Eucharist central. Create space for real conversation, real faith, real encounter.
And today, pray over your children by name. Ask the Holy Spirit to open their eyes—to recognize Jesus in their lives, in His Word, and most especially in the Eucharist. Ask that their hearts would burn with love for Him.
Because when they recognize Him—
everything changes direction.
“The Eucharist is the memorial of Christ’s Passover.” (CCC 1362)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Where might I be discouraged or confused—and missing Jesus’ presence?
In My Home: How can we create more space for encountering Jesus in Scripture and the Eucharist?
In My World: Who might need someone to walk with them in their confusion and point them to Christ?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one place where each person has felt confused, discouraged, or uncertain.
Then pray together as a family. Parents, place your hands gently on each person and pray over them by name. Ask Jesus to walk with them, to open their eyes, and to set their hearts on fire with His love. Renounce any discouragement, confusion, or lies from the Enemy. Pray for clarity, faith, and joy in recognizing Christ.
Daily Challenge: Read a short Scripture passage together and ask: “What is Jesus saying to us right now?”

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
