INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | John 10:1–10
Jesus said:
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate
but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber.
But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.
The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice,
as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
When he has driven out all his own,
he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him,
because they recognize his voice.
But they will not follow a stranger;
they will run away from him,
because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.”
Although Jesus used this figure of speech,
the Pharisees did not realize what he was trying to tell them.
So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you,
I am the gate for the sheep.
All who came before me are thieves and robbers,
but the sheep did not listen to them.
I am the gate.
Whoever enters through me will be saved,
and will come in and go out and find pasture.
A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy;
I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Jesus is not one option among many—He is the only gate to true life.
Whose voice am I really listening to—and where is it leading me?
Jesus gives us two powerful images: shepherd and gate. Both reveal something essential.
First, the shepherd “calls his own sheep by name.” This is deeply personal. In the ancient Near East, shepherds often named their sheep and would call them individually. The sheep would respond—not because they were forced, but because they recognized the voice.
This is how God relates to you.
Not generically. Not distantly. Personally.
He knows your name. He speaks to your heart. And He leads—not from behind, but “ahead of them.” He goes first.
But there are other voices.
“A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy.” The enemy does not always appear obvious. His voice can sound appealing, persuasive, even reasonable. But its fruit is always the same—confusion, division, emptiness, destruction.
The key difference? Recognition.
“They recognize his voice.”
This is formed over time. Through listening. Through relationship. Through familiarity.
Then Jesus declares: “I am the gate.”
Not a gate.
The gate.
In the ancient sheepfold, the shepherd himself would often lie across the opening at night—becoming the gate. Nothing entered or exited without passing through him.
This is what Jesus is saying.
He is the point of entry. The place of safety. The source of life.
“Whoever enters through me will be saved… and find pasture.”
And then the promise: “life… more abundantly.”
The Greek word perisson means overflowing, beyond measure, excessive in the best sense. This is not survival. This is fullness.
In family life, this Gospel is incredibly practical.
Our homes are filled with voices—media, culture, opinions, pressures. Some lead toward life. Others quietly lead away from it.
Are we helping our children recognize the voice of Jesus?
Do they know what it sounds like? Through Scripture, prayer, the Church? Or are they more familiar with the voices of the world?
The domestic church must be a place where His voice is heard clearly.
Parents, this is your mission. Not to control every influence—but to form recognition. To help your children know the voice of the Shepherd so deeply that they can discern truth from falsehood.
And today, pray over your children by name. Ask the Holy Spirit to sharpen their ability to hear Jesus’ voice—to reject the voices that lead them away—and to follow Him with confidence.
Because there are many voices.
But only one leads to life.
And that life is abundant.
“The Church is the sheepfold, the sole and necessary gateway to which is Christ.” (CCC 754)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Am I truly listening for and following the voice of Jesus?
In My Home: How can we help each other better recognize God’s voice as a family?
In My World: What voices around me are leading people away from truth—and how can I respond?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one voice or influence that helps each person grow closer to God.
Then pray together as a family. Parents, place your hands gently on each person and pray over them by name. Ask Jesus to help them hear His voice clearly. Renounce any confusion, deception, or harmful influences. Pray for wisdom, discernment, and courage to follow Him.
Daily Challenge: Take a few minutes in silence today and simply listen—ask Jesus to speak, and pay attention to what comes.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
