INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Matthew 9:36—10:8
At the sight of the crowds, Jesus’ heart was moved with pity for them
because they were troubled and abandoned,
like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples,
“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;
so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest.”
Then he summoned his twelve disciples
and gave them authority over unclean spirits
to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness.
The names of the twelve apostles are these:
first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew;
James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector;
James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus;
Simon from Cana, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.
Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus,
“Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town.
Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons.
Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
God does not merely see the needs of the world—He sends people to meet them.
When you look at the needs around you, do you primarily see problems to discuss or a mission to embrace?
The Gospel begins with one of the most moving descriptions of Jesus in all of Scripture. He looks upon the crowds and His heart is moved with pity. The Greek word used here, splagchnizomai, describes a deep, visceral compassion arising from the depths of one’s being. Jesus does not merely notice suffering. He enters into it. He sees people who are troubled, abandoned, confused, and spiritually hungry, and His heart responds with love.
Then comes a surprising turn. Rather than simply solving every problem Himself, Jesus invites His disciples into the mission. “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few.” The solution to the world’s needs is not ultimately a program, a policy, or a strategy. It is people who allow themselves to be sent by God. The Lord still works primarily through willing hearts.
Notice something else. The apostles listed in today’s Gospel are remarkably ordinary. Fishermen. A tax collector. Men with different personalities, backgrounds, strengths, and weaknesses. One would even betray Him. Yet Jesus calls them anyway. The power of their mission would not come from their qualifications but from His presence. God has always delighted in accomplishing extraordinary things through ordinary people who trust Him.
This remains true today. One of the Enemy’s most effective lies is convincing us that someone else is better suited for the task. Someone holier. More gifted. More educated. More experienced. Yet the Kingdom advances whenever ordinary believers say yes to God’s invitation. The Lord does not call the equipped; He equips the called.
The harvest field begins much closer than we often imagine. It begins in our homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, parishes, and friendships. There are people around us carrying burdens, wounds, fears, loneliness, and spiritual confusion. Many are longing for hope but do not know where to find it. God may be preparing us to become the answer to a prayer they have not yet spoken aloud.
The command Jesus gives is striking: “Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.” Everything we possess—faith, mercy, forgiveness, grace, talents, opportunities, and even life itself—is gift. The Christian life is not about accumulating blessings but becoming a conduit through which blessings flow to others.
Build saint-forming homes by embracing your family’s mission together. Pray over your spouse and children by name. Ask the Holy Spirit daily whom He wants you to encourage, serve, invite, or accompany. Let your home become a launching place for discipleship. The harvest is still abundant. The Lord is still calling laborers. And He may be speaking your name today.
“The whole Church is apostolic, in that she remains, through the successors of St. Peter and the other apostles, in communion of faith and life with her origin: and in that she is ‘sent out’ into the whole world.” (CCC 863)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Where might God be calling me to step beyond comfort and into mission?
In My Home: How can our family become more intentional about serving others and sharing our faith?
In My World: Who is one person God may be inviting me to encourage, accompany, or pray for this week?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one person you know who may be struggling, lonely, discouraged, or in need of prayer.
Then pray over each person by name. Ask the Lord to fill them with compassion, courage, and attentiveness to the needs of others. Pray that they recognize God’s call upon their lives, reject every lie of inadequacy, and become joyful laborers in His harvest.
Daily Challenge: Reach out intentionally to one person today through a call, note, text, invitation, or act of service.
