INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Matthew 25:14–30
Jesus told his disciples this parable:
"A man going on a journey
called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them.
To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one–
to each according to his ability.
Then he went away.
Immediately the one who received five talents went and traded with them,
and made another five.
Likewise, the one who received two made another two.
But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground
and buried his master's money.
After a long time
the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them.
The one who had received five talents
came forward bringing the additional five.
He said, 'Master, you gave me five talents.
See, I have made five more.'
His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant.
Since you were faithful in small matters,
I will give you great responsibilities.
Come, share your master's joy.'
Then the one who had received two talents also came forward and said,
'Master, you gave me two talents.
See, I have made two more.'
His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant.
Since you were faithful in small matters,
I will give you great responsibilities.
Come, share your master's joy.'
Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said,
'Master, I knew you were a demanding person,
harvesting where you did not plant
and gathering where you did not scatter;
so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground.
Here it is back.'
His master said to him in reply, 'You wicked, lazy servant!
So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant
and gather where I did not scatter?
Should you not then have put my money in the bank
so that I could have got it back with interest on my return?
Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten.
For to everyone who has,
more will be given and he will grow rich;
but from the one who has not,
even what he has will be taken away.
And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth."

GOING DEEPER
Buried Grace is Still Accountability
This Gospel might seem harsh at first glance. A man is condemned not for what he did, but for what he didn’t do. He didn’t steal the money. He didn’t squander it. He simply buried it. And that, Jesus says, is worthy of judgment.
This parable isn’t about money. It’s about mission. It’s about grace. A “talent” in biblical times was a massive weight—literally over 70 pounds of silver. In today’s economy, even one talent would be worth over a million dollars. Jesus is telling us that what we’ve been given—our lives, our faith, our marriages, our children, our time, our gifts—is beyond price. And He’s entrusted us with these not to protect or preserve them, but to risk them in love.
Notice: the servant who buried the talent feared his master. He misunderstood his heart. He saw him as harsh and unjust. And that false view paralyzed him. This is the great tragedy of many Christian homes. We teach rules without relationship. We teach truth without love. And so our children fear God without knowing Him.
God doesn’t just want “safe.” He wants faithful. Risky. Courageous. Fruitful. He wants saints who say yes with trembling hands and open hearts. The first two servants doubled their talents, but they also risked losing it all. That’s what love does. That’s what faith does. It steps out. It multiplies. It doesn’t hoard. It gives.
Parents and grandparents, are you multiplying what you’ve been given? Are you investing in the souls of your children? Are you praying over them daily, speaking life into them, calling out their God-given identity and mission? Or have you buried your influence under busyness, comfort, fear?
Jesus says, “Come, share your Master’s joy.” He invites us not into performance, but participation. Don’t bury your gifts. Don't silence the Spirit. The world needs what God has placed in you. So go all in.
“The grace of the Holy Spirit confers upon us the righteousness of God. United to Christ in love, we bear fruit for God.” (CCC 1988)
