GOSPEL | Luke 16:1-13
Jesus said to his disciples,
"A rich man had a steward
who was reported to him for squandering his property.
He summoned him and said,
'What is this I hear about you?
Prepare a full account of your stewardship,
because you can no longer be my steward.'
The steward said to himself, 'What shall I do,
now that my master is taking the position of steward away from me?
I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg.
I know what I shall do so that,
when I am removed from the stewardship,
they may welcome me into their homes.'
He called in his master's debtors one by one.
To the first he said,
'How much do you owe my master?'
He replied, 'One hundred measures of olive oil.'
He said to him, 'Here is your promissory note.
Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.'
Then to another the steward said, 'And you, how much do you owe?'
He replied, 'One hundred kors of wheat.'
The steward said to him, 'Here is your promissory note;
write one for eighty.'
And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently.
"For the children of this world
are more prudent in dealing with their own generation
than are the children of light.
I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth,
so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.
The person who is trustworthy in very small matters
is also trustworthy in great ones;
and the person who is dishonest in very small matters
is also dishonest in great ones.
If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth,
who will trust you with true wealth?
If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another,
who will give you what is yours?
No servant can serve two masters.
He will either hate one and love the other,
or be devoted to one and despise the other.
You cannot serve both God and mammon."

GOING DEEPER
Faithful in the Little, Entrusted with the Great
At first glance, today’s Gospel can seem confusing—why would Jesus commend a dishonest steward? He is not praising dishonesty; He is pointing to shrewdness. The steward, facing dismissal, acts decisively to secure his future. Jesus contrasts this with the children of light, who often lack urgency and focus when it comes to eternal things.
In the first-century world, stewards managed a master’s property but did not own it. They were expected to be trustworthy, since everything they handled belonged to someone else. The Greek word oikonomos (steward) literally means “house-manager.” Jesus’ lesson is clear: our lives, possessions, even our families are not our own—they are entrusted to us. The question is whether we manage them faithfully for the Master.
When Jesus says, “Whoever is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones,” He is revealing something essential. Holiness does not begin with grand gestures but with small daily faithfulness: honesty in words, diligence in work, integrity in finances, prayer in hiddenness. These little acts of stewardship shape our souls for greater trust.
Parents, this message hits home. Our children are not ours to possess—they are entrusted souls. The way we handle small matters—our tone of voice, the way we spend time, the consistency of our prayer, the honesty of our example—teaches them whom we really serve: God or mammon. If we want them to serve the Lord, we must show them, in daily practice, what it looks like to serve one Master only.
This Gospel invites us to make an examination of stewardship: Am I faithful with what God has entrusted—my time, money, relationships, and responsibilities? Or am I squandering them on myself? What if today we began anew, praying over our children by name, asking God to make us and them trustworthy in little things, so that we may inherit the great treasure of eternal life?
Faithful stewardship is not drudgery; it is the joy of serving a good Master. In Him, nothing is wasted—not even the smallest act of love.
“Man’s stewardship over creation is not absolute; it is limited by concern for the quality of life of his neighbor, including generations to come; it requires a religious respect for the integrity of creation” (CCC 2415).
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
Little Things: In what “small matters” of my life is God calling me to greater faithfulness today?
One Master: What does my daily life reveal about whom I truly serve—God or mammon?
Family Stewardship: How can I better live as a faithful steward of my children, showing them God’s love in daily, practical ways?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, each person share one “little thing” they want to be more faithful in this week.
Then pray over each person by name:
“Lord Jesus, You are the true Master. Strengthen [Name] to be faithful in small things. Free them from every lie of the Enemy, make them trustworthy stewards of Your gifts, and guide them to serve You alone with joy.”
DAILY PARENT & GRANDPARENT BLESSING
LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
