GOSPEL | John 13:1–15
Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come
to pass from this world to the Father.
He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end.
The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over.
So, during supper,
fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power
and that he had come from God and was returning to God,
he rose from supper and took off his outer garments.
He took a towel and tied it around his waist.
Then he poured water into a basin
and began to wash the disciples’ feet
and dry them with the towel around his waist.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him,
“Master, are you going to wash my feet?”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“What I am doing, you do not understand now,
but you will understand later.”
Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered him,
“Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.”
Simon Peter said to him,
“Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well.”
Jesus said to him,
“Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed,
for he is clean all over;
so you are clean, but not all.”
For he knew who would betray him;
for this reason, he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
So when he had washed their feet
and put his garments back on and reclined at table again,
he said to them, “Do you realize what I have done for you?
You call me ‘teacher’ and ‘master,’ and rightly so, for indeed I am.
If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet,
you ought to wash one another’s feet.
I have given you a model to follow,
so that as I have done for you, you should also do.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
True greatness in God’s Kingdom is revealed through humble, sacrificial service.
Do I allow Jesus to serve me—and then choose to serve others in the same way?
Holy Thursday brings us into one of the most intimate revelations of Christ’s heart. “He loved his own… and he loved them to the end.” The Greek phrase eis telos means not just “to the end” in time, but to the fullest extent possible. Jesus loves completely, without reserve.
And how does He reveal this love?
He kneels.
The One who has “everything in his power,” who “came from God and is returning to God,” takes the position of a servant. In first-century Jewish culture, foot washing was the task of the lowest servant. It was dirty, humbling, and avoided whenever possible.
Jesus chooses it.
This is not simply an act of kindness. It is a revelation of God. Divine power expresses itself not in domination, but in self-gift.
Peter resists. “You will never wash my feet.” His reaction is understandable. He cannot reconcile greatness with such humility. But Jesus responds with a profound truth: “Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.”
We must first allow ourselves to be served—cleansed, forgiven, loved—before we can truly serve others.
This is where many of us struggle. We want to give, to lead, to act—but we resist being vulnerable, being dependent, being in need of grace. Yet this is the doorway into real relationship with Christ.
In family life, this dynamic is essential. The domestic church is not built on control or perfection, but on mutual self-gift. Parents serve children. Spouses serve one another. Children learn to serve in return.
And this service is not occasional—it is a way of life.
When parents choose patience instead of frustration, when they listen instead of dismissing, when they sacrifice comfort for the good of the family—they are washing feet.
Children are watching. They are learning what love looks like.
Parents, this Gospel calls you to lead through humble service. Let your authority be marked by love, not control. Let your strength be expressed in sacrifice. And do not neglect to receive from Christ the grace you need.
Pray over your children by name, asking the Holy Spirit to form in them servant hearts. Teach them that true greatness is found not in being served, but in giving oneself in love.
Jesus has shown us the way.
Now He invites us to live it.
“Christ’s whole life is a mystery of redemption. Redemption comes to us above all through the blood of his cross, but this mystery is at work throughout Christ’s entire life.” (CCC 517)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Do I resist receiving God’s love and mercy in areas of weakness?
In My Home: How can we grow in serving one another more intentionally and joyfully?
In My World: Where is God calling me to humble myself in service to others?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one way each person can serve someone else in the family this week.
Then pray together as a family. Parents, place your hands gently on each person and pray over them by name. Ask Jesus to give them hearts like His—humble, generous, and willing to serve. Renounce any pride, selfishness, or resistance to love. Pray for strength to serve joyfully, courage to put others first, and deep peace in living as Christ calls us.
Daily Challenge: Perform one hidden act of service for someone in your home today without seeking recognition.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
