INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Matthew 18:21–19:1
Peter approached Jesus and asked him,
"Lord, if my brother sins against me,
how often must I forgive him?
As many as seven times?"
Jesus answered, "I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.
That is why the Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king
who decided to settle accounts with his servants.
When he began the accounting,
a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount.
Since he had no way of paying it back,
his master ordered him to be sold,
along with his wife, his children, and all his property,
in payment of the debt.
At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said,
'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.'
Moved with compassion the master of that servant
let him go and forgave him the loan.
When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants
who owed him a much smaller amount.
He seized him and started to choke him, demanding,
'Pay back what you owe.'
Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him,
'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.'
But he refused.
Instead, he had the fellow servant put in prison
until he paid back the debt.
Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened,
they were deeply disturbed,
and went to their master and reported the whole affair.
His master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant!
I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to.
Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant,
as I had pity on you?'
Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers
until he should pay back the whole debt.
So will my heavenly Father do to you,
unless each of you forgives his brother from his heart."
When Jesus finished these words, he left Galilee
and went to the district of Judea across the Jordan.
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Forgiven Much, Forgive Much
Peter’s question sounds generous—seven times was well beyond rabbinic tradition—but Jesus explodes the math. “Seventy-seven times” is not about counting; it’s about losing count. In the biblical tradition, the number seven symbolizes perfection and completion. By multiplying it, Jesus calls us to a mercy without limits, mirroring the mercy of the Father.
In the parable, the “huge amount” (literally ten thousand talents in Greek) would be an unpayable debt—equivalent to billions today. Jesus paints the absurdity of God forgiving us such a debt, only for us to withhold mercy over the equivalent of pocket change.
Forgiveness is not pretending the wrong never happened. It’s releasing the offender from the debt we feel they owe us—because God has done the same for us. Forgiveness frees both the offender and the offended. The alternative is spiritual imprisonment: when we chain others in bitterness, we bind ourselves.
At home, forgiveness must be more than a theory. Parents—when children hurt each other, guide them beyond “sorry” into real reconciliation. Model it by forgiving your spouse quickly and openly. Bless one another in Jesus’ Name, even in moments of tension. This trains hearts to respond as God responds to us—with compassion, not calculation.
The Catechism reminds us: “It is not in our power not to feel or to forget an offense; but the heart that offers itself to the Holy Spirit turns injury into compassion” (CCC 2843). That’s where freedom lives.
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
Debt Canceled: What “small debt” are you still holding over someone? How might you release it today?
Mercy Received: When have you most deeply experienced God’s forgiveness—and how has it shaped your ability to forgive?
Family Freedom: How can your home become a place where mercy is freely given and quickly received?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, invite each person to share one way they have experienced forgiveness—either receiving or giving it. Then pray aloud over each by name:
“Lord Jesus, thank You for forgiving [name] without limit. Fill [him/her] with Your mercy so they can forgive as You forgive. Let our home be a place where debts are canceled and hearts are free.”
DAILY PARENT & GRANDPARENT BLESSING
LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
