GOSPEL | Matthew 9:1-8
After entering a boat, Jesus made the crossing, and came into his own town.
And there people brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic,
"Courage, child, your sins are forgiven."
At that, some of the scribes said to themselves,
"This man is blaspheming."
Jesus knew what they were thinking, and said,
"Why do you harbor evil thoughts?
Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,'
or to say, 'Rise and walk'?
But that you may know that the Son of Man
has authority on earth to forgive sins"–
he then said to the paralytic,
"Rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home."
He rose and went home.
When the crowds saw this they were struck with awe
and glorified God who had given such authority to men.
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
The greatest miracle is not that we can walk again, but that we can come home to God.
If Jesus were to address your deepest need today, would it be the one you are asking Him to heal?
The friends who carried the paralytic undoubtedly hoped Jesus would restore his body. Instead, Christ first speaks words no one expected: “Courage, child, your sins are forgiven.” At first glance, it almost seems as though Jesus ignores the man’s obvious need. In reality, He addresses the deeper one. Before healing his paralysis, He heals the rupture that sin had caused between the man and God. Jesus reveals that while physical suffering is painful, spiritual separation is infinitely more devastating.
This is one of the first places in Matthew’s Gospel where Jesus openly exercises an authority that belongs to God alone. Throughout the Old Testament, only God forgives sins. The scribes understand exactly what Jesus is claiming, which is why they accuse Him of blasphemy. But Jesus does not retract His words. Instead, He heals the man’s body as visible proof that He truly possesses divine authority to heal the soul. The miracle confirms the greater miracle.
Notice, too, that the paralytic never comes to Jesus alone. “When Jesus saw their faith...” The faith of friends helped carry him into the presence of Christ. This beautifully foreshadows the life of the Church. None of us reaches heaven in isolation. We pray for one another, carry one another through suffering, and at times believe for one another until faith is rekindled. Salvation is deeply personal, but never merely private.
This Gospel also shines a beautiful light upon the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The same authority Christ exercised here He would later entrust to His Apostles: “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them” (John 20:23). Every confession is another encounter with the same Jesus who still says, “Courage, child.” The priest does not replace Christ; he sacramentally makes present the mercy and authority of Christ, who continues healing souls through His Church.
This truth transforms family life. Every home experiences wounds, misunderstandings, failures, and sin. Build saint-forming homes by making mercy a way of life. Pray over your spouse and children by name. Call daily upon the Holy Spirit. Let your family become a place where forgiveness is sought quickly, offered generously, and received joyfully. Homes rooted in mercy become living signs of the Father’s embrace.
The crowds glorified God because He had given “such authority to men.” That statement still echoes today. Every time we hear the words of absolution, every time grace restores what sin has broken, every time a sinner comes home, Christ continues performing His greatest miracle.
“Christ has willed that in her prayer and life and action His whole Church should be the sign and instrument of the forgiveness and reconciliation that He acquired for us at the price of His blood. But He entrusted the exercise of the power of absolution to the apostolic ministry.” (CCC 1442)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Is there an area of my life where Jesus is inviting me to receive His mercy more deeply?
In My Home: How can our family grow in asking for and offering forgiveness more readily?
In My World: Who may be depending upon my prayers to help carry them closer to Christ?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Gather together and share about a time when someone forgave you—or when asking forgiveness brought healing to a relationship.
Then pray over each person by name. Ask Jesus to strengthen their faith, heal every hidden wound, and fill them with the courage to seek His mercy whenever they fall.
Daily Challenge: Spend a few quiet minutes making an honest examination of conscience, and if needed, make a plan to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation soon.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
