INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Matthew 5:20-26
Jesus said to his disciples:
"I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that
of the scribes and Pharisees,
you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.
"You have heard that it was said to your ancestors,
You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.
But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother
will be liable to judgment,
and whoever says to his brother, Raqa,
will be answerable to the Sanhedrin,
and whoever says, 'You fool,' will be liable to fiery Gehenna.
Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar,
and there recall that your brother
has anything against you,
leave your gift there at the altar,
go first and be reconciled with your brother,
and then come and offer your gift.
Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him.
Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge,
and the judge will hand you over to the guard,
and you will be thrown into prison.
Amen, I say to you,
you will not be released until you have paid the last penny."
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Reconciliation is not a side issue in the Christian life—it is at the very heart of it.
Is there a relationship, wound, resentment, or unresolved conflict that Jesus is inviting you to address rather than avoid?
The scribes and Pharisees were experts in external obedience. They knew the rules, followed the rituals, and carefully observed religious practices. Yet Jesus shocks His listeners by saying that His disciples must possess a righteousness that goes beyond theirs. The Kingdom of God is not merely about outward conformity. It is about inner transformation.
Notice how quickly Jesus moves from murder to anger. Most of us can easily say, “I have never killed anyone.” But Jesus is concerned with the seeds that eventually grow into destructive actions. Resentment, contempt, bitterness, and unresolved anger poison the heart long before they damage relationships. The battle for holiness is often won or lost in the hidden places of the soul.
One striking detail in today’s Gospel is the word “Raqa,” an Aramaic insult implying that someone is empty-headed or worthless. Jesus is exposing a dangerous temptation: reducing another person to a label rather than seeing them as a beloved child of God. Whenever we define people solely by their failures, politics, mistakes, or wounds, we begin moving away from the heart of Christ.
The Lord’s remedy is both simple and challenging. Before bringing your gift to the altar, seek reconciliation. Imagine the force of that command. Jesus is teaching that right relationship with God and right relationship with others are deeply connected. Genuine worship cannot be separated from a sincere desire to forgive, seek forgiveness, and pursue peace.
This does not mean every broken relationship will be instantly repaired. Some wounds run deep. Some people may not respond. Reconciliation and forgiveness are not the same thing. Yet Christ calls us to take the first step whenever possible. The chains of resentment often imprison the one carrying them more than the one who caused the hurt. Forgiveness is not excusing evil; it is refusing to let evil continue to rule our hearts.
Today’s memorial gives us a beautiful example. Saint Barnabas became known as the “Son of Encouragement.” Again and again, he built bridges where others saw barriers. He welcomed Paul when many distrusted him, strengthened struggling believers, and fostered unity within the early Church. Barnabas reminds us that one encouraging, reconciling person can change the course of countless lives.
The domestic church is often where this Gospel becomes most real. Husbands and wives, parents and children, siblings and relatives all have opportunities to practice mercy, humility, and forgiveness. Build saint-forming homes by refusing to let small wounds become large divisions. Pray over your spouse and children by name. Call daily upon the Holy Spirit. Let your family become a place where reconciliation is sought quickly, forgiveness is offered generously, and Christ’s peace reigns abundantly.
“Forgiveness is the fundamental condition of the reconciliation of the children of God with their Father and of men with one another.” (CCC 2844)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: What resentment or wound am I struggling to surrender to Christ?
In My Home: Is there a relationship within my family that needs greater understanding, forgiveness, or healing?
In My World: What practical step can I take toward reconciliation with someone this week?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share a time when someone forgave you or showed you unexpected mercy.
Then pray over each person by name. Ask the Lord to heal wounds, remove bitterness, and strengthen hearts to forgive. Pray that each family member knows God’s mercy, rejects the Enemy’s lies, grows in humility, and becomes an instrument of reconciliation and peace.
Daily Challenge: Take one concrete step toward reconciliation today—a conversation, apology, note, text, prayer, or act of kindness.
