GOD'S DECLARATION TO YOU TODAY
You are not forgotten in your grief. I see your tears. I am with you in the waiting. What you surrender in sorrow, I will transform into joy. You are made to hope, because I am faithful.
INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | John 16:16–20
Jesus said to his disciples:
“A little while and you will no longer see me,
and again a little while later and you will see me.”
So some of his disciples said to one another,
“What does this mean that he is saying to us,
‘A little while and you will not see me,
and again a little while and you will see me,’
and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
So they said, “What is this ‘little while’ of which he speaks?
We do not know what he means.”
Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them,
“Are you discussing with one another what I said,
‘A little while and you will not see me,
and again a little while and you will see me’?
Amen, amen, I say to you,
you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices;
you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Grief Is Not the End of the Story
The disciples are confused, anxious, unsettled. “What is this ‘little while’?” They don’t understand what Jesus is doing—or what He’s preparing them for. So He names it: grief. Loss. The sting of silence. The ache of not seeing.
But He doesn’t stop there. He gives them a promise: “Your grief will become joy.”
This is one of the most profound truths of the Christian life: grief is not the end of the story. In God’s hands, suffering is not wasted. It is transformed. He doesn’t just remove the sorrow—He redeems it. The same hearts that weep will overflow with joy. Not because the pain was small, but because God is greater.
This is the pattern of the Cross. The “little while” of absence gives way to the glory of resurrection. And this same pattern plays out in our lives—in our waiting, our longing, our losses. Jesus doesn’t dismiss our pain. He enters it. He sits in it with us. And then, at the right moment, He turns it into something we never could have imagined.
For families, this is essential. Our children will face suffering. They’ll encounter unanswered prayers, disappointments, seasons of silence. But if we walk with them, pray over them, and teach them to hope in the dark, we’re giving them more than comfort—we’re giving them Christ.
Let’s be households that believe in joy—not as a denial of grief, but as its holy reversal.
Catechism Connection: CCC 164 – “Faith is often lived in darkness and can be put to the test. The world we live in often seems very far from the one promised by faith.”
LIFE APPLICATION
Cling to the promise: Where in my life do I need to trust that this season of sorrow is only “a little while”?
Practice resurrection vision: How can our family name our griefs honestly—and still proclaim that joy is coming?
Hope for others: Who do I know that is grieving today, and how can I speak the hope of Christ’s promise into their pain?
LIVE IT
Going around, affirm how you’ve seen each person persevere through something difficult this week. Encourage them. Let them know: Your grief is not the end. You were made for joy.
GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
