Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Matthew 23:23-26
Jesus said:
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.
You pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin,
and have neglected the weightier things of the law:
judgment and mercy and fidelity.
But these you should have done, without neglecting the others.
Blind guides, who strain out the gnat and swallow the camel!
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.
You cleanse the outside of cup and dish,
but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence.
Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup,
so that the outside also may be clean.”

GOING DEEPER
God is not asking for a polished appearance; He is asking for a heart where mercy, fidelity, and truth actually live.
What detail of religious or family life might be receiving your attention while a more important matter of the heart is being left untouched?
Jesus does not condemn tithing mint, dill, and cummin. He says those things should be done. But He names what is weightier: judgment, mercy, and fidelity. The Pharisees are meticulous about the smallest visible observances while neglecting justice, compassion, and faithfulness—the things that reveal whether God’s law has truly reached the heart.
His image is deliberately absurd: straining out a tiny gnat while swallowing a camel. Both animals were considered unclean, but the contrast is enormous. We can become preoccupied with minor irritations, tiny failures in others, or outward religious details, while overlooking the far greater matter of how we are treating the people God has entrusted to us.
The cup and dish make the same point. We can maintain the outward appearance of prayer, respectability, achievement, and spiritual seriousness while inside harboring resentment, greed, self-indulgence, harshness, or contempt. Jesus does not expose this to shame us. He exposes it because He wants to make us whole.
The domestic church is where this becomes wonderfully practical. Our children do not need parents who look spiritually impressive. They need parents whose love is real: parents who apologize, who do not make a child carry the burden of their bad mood, who speak truth without humiliation, who treat a spouse with tenderness when no one else is watching.
Judgment, mercy, and fidelity belong together. Judgment means seeing clearly what is true and right. Mercy means moving toward another person’s need with compassion. Fidelity means remaining steady in love when it becomes costly. Truth without mercy becomes cold; mercy without truth becomes shallow; both need the faithful heart that stays.
The Enemy loves the illusion of a clean exterior because it keeps us from seeking healing at the root. But Jesus invites us to a better way: bring the inner life to Him. Let Him cleanse the cup. The beautiful life is not a performance; it is the overflow of a heart surrendered to God.
Build saint-forming homes; pray over your children by name; act in the power of the Holy Spirit by asking Jesus to cleanse one hidden area of your heart today.
“Pure in heart” refers to those who have attuned their intellects and wills to the demands of God’s holiness, chiefly in three areas: charity; chastity or sexual rectitude; love of truth and orthodoxy of faith. There is a connection between purity of heart, of body, and of faith: The faithful must believe the articles of the Creed “so that by believing they may obey God, by obeying may live well, by living well may purify their hearts, and with pure hearts may understand what they believe.” (CCC, 2518)

In My Heart: What interior attitude needs Jesus’ cleansing more than my outward image needs protecting?
In My Home: Where can I choose mercy and fidelity rather than criticism, irritation, or control?
In My World: How can I help bring attention to what matters most rather than getting lost in lesser concerns?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around … share one quality that makes a person beautiful on the inside: mercy, honesty, faithfulness, humility, courage, or kindness.
Then pray over each person by name. Ask that each know personally the love of the Father, be freed from every lie of the Enemy that says appearances are more important than the heart, receive strength to overcome temptation, and be given joyful courage to live with mercy, fidelity, and truth.
Daily Challenge: Before speaking a criticism today, pause and ask: Is this the weightier thing, and can I say it with mercy?

LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.
