GOSPEL | Matthew 14:22–36
Jesus made the disciples get into a boat
and precede him to the other side of the sea,
while he dismissed the crowds.
After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.
When it was evening he was there alone.
Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore,
was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.
During the fourth watch of the night,
he came toward them, walking on the sea.
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified.
“It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.
At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Peter said to him in reply,
“Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
He said, “Come.”
Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.
But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened;
and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him,
and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
After they got into the boat, the wind died down.
Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying,
“Truly, you are the Son of God.”
After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.
When the men of that place recognized him,
they sent word to all the surrounding country.
People brought to him all those who were sick
and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak,
and as many as touched it were healed.
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Faith Begins Where Sight Ends
Matthew tells us it was the “fourth watch of the night” (between 3–6 a.m.)—the darkest hours before dawn. The Sea of Galilee is infamous for sudden, violent storms. Add exhaustion and fear, and the disciples were in survival mode.
Jesus appears—but they don’t recognize Him. Why? Because He’s walking on the chaos. He’s not apart from the storm, but Lord of it. His words—“Take courage, it is I”—are even more striking in Greek: tharseite, egō eimi. Literally: “Take heart. I AM.” The very name God gave to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:14). The One who split the Red Sea now walks on water.
Peter steps out. He walks. But the moment he shifts his focus from Christ to the waves, he begins to sink. His cry—“Lord, save me!”—becomes the shortest and most perfect prayer. And Jesus answers it immediately.
Parents, your children will face storms. The winds of culture are against them. They will cry. They will doubt. And they’ll watch what you do. Fix your eyes on Jesus. Call on His Name out loud. Let your children see your faith. Lay hands on them and pray: “Jesus, save my children. Be their strength when they’re afraid. Help them walk toward You, even in the storm.”
Don’t wait for calm seas. Invite Jesus into the boat now. He will bring peace that surpasses the wind.
“In Jesus, the Kingdom of God is at hand. He calls his disciples to abandon everything and walk with him.” (CCC 544)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
Boat or Waves: What’s one fear or hardship distracting you from focusing on Jesus right now?
Step Out: What “step of faith” is Jesus asking of you today—even if it feels risky or unknown?
Teach the Cry: How can you teach your children to call on the Name of Jesus when they’re afraid?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, have each person name a current “storm” they’re facing—something uncertain, scary, or hard. Then, have someone gently place their hand on each person’s shoulder and pray out loud:
“Jesus, help [name] keep their eyes on You. Calm their fear. Strengthen their faith. Let them know You are near. Save them and lead them.”
DAILY PARENT & GRANDPARENT BLESSING
