GOSPEL | Matthew 18:21–35
Peter approached Jesus and asked him,
“Lord, if my brother sins against me,
how often must I forgive him?
As many as seven times?”
Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.
That is why the Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king
who decided to settle accounts with his servants.
When he began the accounting,
a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount.
Since he had no way of paying it back,
his master ordered him to be sold,
along with his wife, his children, and all his property,
in payment of the debt.
At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said,
‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.’
Moved with compassion the master of that servant
let him go and forgave him the loan.
When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants
who owed him a much smaller amount.
He seized him and started to choke him, demanding,
‘Pay back what you owe.’
Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him,
‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’
But he refused.
Instead, he had him put in prison
until he paid back the debt.
Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened,
they were deeply disturbed, and went to their master
and reported the whole affair.
His master summoned him and said to him,
‘You wicked servant!
I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to.
Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant,
as I had pity on you?’
Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers
until he should pay back the whole debt.
So will my heavenly Father do to you,
unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
The measure of mercy we give reveals whether we have truly received the mercy of God.
Who do you still struggle to forgive?
Peter thinks he is being generous. In Jewish teaching, forgiving three times was already considered virtuous. So Peter doubles it and adds one for good measure: seven times. Surely that must satisfy the standard.
But Jesus answers with something far beyond calculation: “seventy-seven times.” In other words, forgiveness is not meant to be counted. Mercy in the Kingdom of God is not a quota—it is a way of life.
To drive the point home, Jesus tells a story that would have stunned His listeners. A servant owes the king an impossibly large debt. The Greek term suggests tens of thousands of talents—an amount so enormous it would take multiple lifetimes to repay. It represents the immeasurable weight of sin humanity carries before God.
Yet when the servant begs for mercy, the king does something astonishing. He cancels the entire debt.
The servant walks away free.
But then comes the tragedy. The same man finds someone who owes him a tiny fraction in comparison. Instead of mercy, he grabs him by the throat and demands repayment. The man who was just forgiven refuses to forgive.
This is where the parable becomes painfully personal.
Sometimes we receive God’s mercy intellectually but not existentially. We know we are forgiven, but we have not allowed the depth of that mercy to soften our hearts. And when someone wounds us, the instinct is to hold the debt.
Yet Jesus makes something clear: unforgiveness imprisons us as much as the other person. When we cling to resentment, we place ourselves in a spiritual prison of bitterness.
Forgiveness does not mean pretending the wound was small. It means entrusting justice to God and refusing to let the wound define our heart.
The domestic church is one of the most important places this must be lived. Families inevitably wound each other—sometimes deeply. But when parents model repentance, humility, and forgiveness, children learn that mercy is stronger than failure.
Homes become places of healing rather than places where grudges quietly grow.
Build saint-forming homes by refusing to let resentment take root, pray over your spouse and children in the powerful name of Jesus that every wound be healed and every heart remain tender to mercy, and remember that the most powerful witness a family can give the world is the radical forgiveness that flows from the Cross.
“There is no limit or measure to this essentially divine forgiveness… but it cannot penetrate our hearts as long as we have not forgiven those who have trespassed against us.” (CCC 2845)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Who is the person I most struggle to forgive—and what is keeping me from releasing that debt to God?
In My Home: Do we model quick forgiveness in our family, or do resentments linger beneath the surface?
In My World: How might my witness of mercy change someone’s understanding of Christ?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one way someone recently showed mercy or forgiveness.
Then gently place your hand on each member of your family and pray over them by name—asking Jesus to heal every wound they carry, to free them from resentment, and to give them hearts that forgive quickly and deeply as He forgives us.
Daily Challenge: Pray today for someone who has hurt you. Ask Jesus to bless them and bring healing to both of your hearts.
DAILY PARENT & GRANDPARENT BLESSING
LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10.
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
