GOD’S DECLARATION TO YOU TODAY
I am asking you to rise from what has held you down and walk in the life I give you.
INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | John 5:1–16
There was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now there is in Jerusalem at the Sheep Gate
a pool called in Hebrew Bethesda, with five porticoes.
In these lay a large number of ill, blind, lame, and crippled.
One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.
When Jesus saw him lying there
and knew that he had been ill for a long time, he said to him,
“Do you want to be well?”
The sick man answered him,
“Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool
when the water is stirred up;
while I am on my way, someone else gets down there before me.”
Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your mat, and walk.”
Immediately the man became well, took up his mat, and walked.
Now that day was a sabbath.
So the Jews said to the man who was cured,
“It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.”
He answered them, “The man who made me well told me,
‘Take up your mat and walk.’”
They asked him,
“Who is the man who told you, ‘Take it up and walk’?”
The man who was healed did not know who it was,
for Jesus had slipped away, since there was a crowd there.
After this Jesus found him in the temple area and said to him,
“Look, you are well; do not sin any more,
so that nothing worse may happen to you.”
The man went and told the Jews
that Jesus was the one who had made him well.
Therefore, the Jews began to persecute Jesus
because he did this on a sabbath.
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Jesus does not only ask if we want healing—He asks if we truly want transformation.
When Jesus asks the man, “Do you want to be well?” how honestly would we answer that question in our own lives?
At first glance, the question almost seems strange. Of course the man wants to be healed. He has suffered for thirty-eight years. Yet Jesus still asks. Why? Because sometimes the greatest obstacle to healing is not God’s power but our willingness to step out of the patterns that have defined our lives.
The setting itself carries deep symbolism. The pool is called Bethesda, which in Hebrew likely means “house of mercy.” Around it lie the suffering of humanity: the blind, lame, and crippled. Many scholars note that these five porticoes may symbolically echo the five books of the Law. Humanity lies wounded under the Law, waiting for mercy that only Christ can ultimately bring.
Notice how the man answers Jesus’ question. He does not say yes. Instead he explains why healing has never happened: “I have no one to put me into the pool.” His response is rooted in discouragement and resignation. After decades of disappointment, he has come to believe that his condition is simply the way life will remain.
Jesus bypasses all of that. He does not help the man into the pool. He gives a command: “Rise, take up your mat, and walk.” The Greek word used here—egeire—is the same word used later for resurrection. Jesus is not merely fixing a physical problem; He is calling the man into new life.
Then something remarkable happens. The man carries his mat on the Sabbath. What had once defined his suffering becomes the visible sign of his freedom. The very thing he once lay upon now becomes evidence of the miracle.
This Gospel speaks powerfully into family life. Many of us carry long-standing patterns—habits, wounds, discouragements—that quietly shape our homes. Sometimes we assume they will never change. But Christ’s question still comes to us: Do you want to be well?
The domestic church becomes a place of transformation when families respond to that question honestly. Parents model repentance. Forgiveness is practiced. Prayer becomes real. Healing begins when someone—often a mother or father—decides to stand up in the power of Christ and begin walking differently.
Parents, this Gospel invites us to lead our homes in spiritual courage. Do not settle for patterns of discouragement or compromise. Speak the name of Jesus over your family. Pray over your children by name. Call them into the freedom and identity Christ has given them. The Lord who told that man to rise is speaking the same life-giving command into your family today through the Holy Spirit.
“The grace of Christ is the gratuitous gift that God makes to us of his own life, infused by the Holy Spirit into our soul to heal it of sin and to sanctify it.” (CCC 1999)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: What area of my life has remained unchanged because I have quietly accepted it as permanent?
In My Home: How can our family create an environment where healing, forgiveness, and spiritual growth are actively pursued?
In My World: Who around me might be waiting for encouragement to believe that real change is possible through Christ?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one area of life where each person would like Jesus to bring healing, strength, or renewal.
Then pray together as a family. Parents, gently place your hands on each person and pray over them by name. Ask Jesus to reveal His deep love for them and break any discouragement or lies of the Enemy that say change is impossible. Pray for strength to overcome temptation, courage to live the Gospel joyfully, and grace to walk in the freedom Christ offers.
Daily Challenge: Each family member chooses one small step today that reflects “rising and walking” in a new way with Christ.
