GOSPEL | John 8:21–30
Jesus said to the Pharisees:
“I am going away and you will look for me,
but you will die in your sin.
Where I am going you cannot come.”
So the Jews said,
“He is not going to kill himself, is he,
because he said, ‘Where I am going you cannot come’?”
He said to them, “You belong to what is below,
I belong to what is above.
You belong to this world,
but I do not belong to this world.
That is why I told you that you will die in your sins.
For if you do not believe that I AM,
you will die in your sins.”
So they said to him, “Who are you?”
Jesus said to them, “What I told you from the beginning.
I have much to say about you in condemnation.
But the one who sent me is true,
and what I heard from him I tell the world.”
They did not realize that he was speaking to them of the Father.
So Jesus said to them,
“When you lift up the Son of Man,
then you will realize that I AM,
and that I do nothing on my own,
but I say only what the Father taught me.
The one who sent me is with me.
He has not left me alone,
because I always do what is pleasing to him.”
Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him.
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
To believe that Jesus is “I AM” is to step out of sin and into the life of God.
Do I truly believe in Jesus as Lord, or do I reduce Him to someone who fits comfortably within my life?
This Gospel contains one of the most powerful declarations of Jesus’ identity. He says, “If you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.” This is not merely a title. It is the divine name revealed to Moses in Exodus when God says, “I AM WHO AM.” Jesus is claiming nothing less than full divine identity.
In the Greek text, Jesus simply says ego eimi—“I AM.” There is no predicate attached. This is intentional. It echoes the sacred name of God. The listeners would have understood the weight of this claim. To accept it requires faith. To reject it has eternal consequences.
Jesus contrasts two ways of living: “You belong to what is below… I belong to what is above.” This is not about physical location but spiritual orientation. To belong “below” is to live according to the patterns of the world—self-centered, reactive, driven by fear or pride. To belong “above” is to live in communion with the Father.
Then Jesus points forward to the Cross: “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM.” The ultimate revelation of who Jesus is will come not through power or spectacle, but through sacrifice. The Cross becomes the place where divine love is fully revealed.
In our daily lives, this question remains: Who is Jesus to me? It is easy to acknowledge Him intellectually or culturally. But true belief transforms everything. It reorders priorities. It reshapes desires. It calls us out of sin and into a new way of living.
Family life is where this belief becomes visible. Children learn what we truly believe not from what we say, but from how we live. Do they see parents who belong to “above”—who pray, who trust, who forgive, who seek God’s will? Or do they see a life shaped primarily by the pressures and patterns of the world?
The domestic church becomes powerful when Christ is not simply part of the home, but its foundation. His word is honored. His presence is sought. His will is pursued together as a family.
Parents, this Gospel calls us to decisive faith. Do not settle for a partial relationship with Jesus. Declare with your life that He is “I AM”—Lord of your home, your decisions, your future. Pray over your children by name, asking the Holy Spirit to root them in truth and free them from sin. Lead your family to live not from “below,” but from the life of God above.
“To believe in Jesus Christ and in the One who sent him for our salvation is necessary for obtaining that salvation.” (CCC 161)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Do I truly believe in Jesus as Lord, or do I keep parts of my life separate from Him?
In My Home: What changes would reflect that Christ is truly at the center of our family life?
In My World: How can I witness more clearly to the truth of who Jesus is?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one way each person wants to grow closer to Jesus.
Then pray together as a family. Parents, place your hands gently on each person and pray over them by name. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus to them more deeply as Lord and Savior. Renounce any lies of the Enemy that draw them away from truth. Pray for strength to overcome temptation, clarity to follow God’s will, and joy in living as children of God.
Daily Challenge: As a family, say aloud together: “Jesus, You are Lord,” and commit one concrete action today that reflects that truth.
DAILY PARENT & GRANDPARENT BLESSING
LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
