GOSPEL | John 13:21–33, 36–38
Reclining at table with his disciples, Jesus was deeply troubled and testified,
“Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
The disciples looked at one another, at a loss as to whom he meant.
One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved,
was reclining at Jesus’ side.
So Simon Peter nodded to him to find out whom he meant.
He leaned back against Jesus’ chest and said to him,
“Master, who is it?”
Jesus answered,
“It is the one to whom I hand the morsel after I have dipped it.”
So he dipped the morsel and took it and handed it to Judas,
son of Simon the Iscariot.
After Judas took the morsel, Satan entered him.
So Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”
Now none of those reclining at table realized why he said this to him.
Some thought that since Judas kept the money bag, Jesus had told him,
“Buy what we need for the feast,”
or to give something to the poor.
So Judas took the morsel and left at once. And it was night.
When he had left, Jesus said,
“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself,
and he will glorify him at once.
My children, I will be with you only a little while longer.
You will look for me, and as I told the Jews,
‘Where I go you cannot come,’ so now I say it to you.”
Simon Peter said to him, “Master, where are you going?”
Jesus answered him,
“Where I am going, you cannot follow me now,
though you will follow later.”
Peter said to him,
“Master, why can I not follow you now?
I will lay down my life for you.”
Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me?
Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow
before you deny me three times.”

GOING DEEPER
Jesus loves us fully—even knowing our betrayal and weakness.
When faced with my own weakness, do I hide from Jesus or remain close to Him?
This Gospel takes us into one of the most intimate and painful moments in the life of Christ. Surrounded by His closest friends, Jesus reveals that betrayal is already at work. The Greek word describing Him as “deeply troubled” (etarachthē) conveys a profound interior anguish. This is not distant foreknowledge—this is personal sorrow.
Two responses to Jesus emerge in this scene.
Judas receives the morsel—an act of friendship and honor—and yet chooses darkness. The Gospel says, “And it was night.” This is more than a time reference. In John’s Gospel, night symbolizes spiritual darkness. Judas physically leaves the room, but more importantly, he steps away from the light of Christ.
Peter, on the other hand, stays close—but overestimates his own strength. “I will lay down my life for you,” he declares. His intention is sincere, but his confidence is misplaced. Without grace, even the strongest resolve can fail.
Jesus sees both clearly. He sees betrayal. He sees denial. And yet He continues forward in love.
This reveals something essential: Jesus’ love is not based on our perfection. It is rooted in His fidelity. He does not withdraw from Judas before the betrayal, nor from Peter before the denial. He remains present, offering Himself even when He is not fully received.
Family life is where this truth becomes deeply real. We will experience moments of failure—impatience, harsh words, broken trust, missed opportunities to love. Children will falter. Parents will fall short. Spouses will wound one another.
The temptation is to withdraw—to retreat into shame or frustration.
But Christ shows us another way: remain.
Stay close. Return quickly. Allow love to restore what weakness has broken.
The domestic church becomes a place of grace when failure is met not with despair, but with repentance and renewed love. When parents model humility. When forgiveness is spoken aloud. When no one is defined by their worst moment.
Parents, this Gospel calls you to lead your home with both truth and mercy. Recognize your own need for grace. Teach your children that falling is not the end—but staying away is. Pray over them by name, asking the Holy Spirit to guard their hearts, strengthen them in temptation, and draw them back whenever they stray.
Jesus knew Peter would deny Him—and still called him forward.
He does the same for your family.
“The human heart is heavy and hardened. God must give man a new heart.” (CCC 1432)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Where do I struggle with weakness, and am I allowing Jesus to meet me there?
In My Home: How can we respond to one another’s failures with both truth and mercy?
In My World: Who might need encouragement that failure is not the end of their story?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one area where each person needs God’s help to be stronger or more faithful.
Then pray together as a family. Parents, place your hands gently on each person and pray over them by name. Ask Jesus to strengthen them in moments of temptation and draw them back quickly if they fall. Renounce any shame or lies from the Enemy that say they are defined by their failures. Pray for courage, perseverance, and deep trust in God’s mercy.
Daily Challenge: When someone in your family makes a mistake today, respond first with patience and encouragement.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
