INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23
The Book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ,
the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Abraham became the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.
Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah,
whose mother was Tamar.
Perez became the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
Ram the father of Amminadab.
Amminadab became the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
Salmon the father of Boaz,
whose mother was Rahab.
Boaz became the father of Obed,
whose mother was Ruth.
Obed became the father of Jesse,
Jesse the father of David the king.
David became the father of Solomon,
whose mother had been the wife of Uriah.
Solomon became the father of Rehoboam,
Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
Abijah the father of Asaph.
Asaph became the father of Jehoshaphat,
Jehoshaphat the father of Joram,
Joram the father of Uzziah.
Uzziah became the father of Jotham,
Jotham the father of Ahaz,
Ahaz the father of Hezekiah.
Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh,
Manasseh the father of Amos,
Amos the father of Josiah.
Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers
at the time of the Babylonian exile.
After the Babylonian exile,
Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel,
Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
Zerubbabel the father of Abiud.
Abiud became the father of Eliakim,
Eliakim the father of Azor,
Azor the father of Zadok.
Zadok became the father of Achim,
Achim the father of Eliud,
Eliud the father of Eleazar.
Eleazar became the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary.
Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ.
Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.
When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived together,
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill
what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,
which means “God is with us.”

GOING DEEPER
Salvation does not drop out of the sky. It enters a family line—and a home willing to receive it.
Where have we treated our family story as too messy for God to inhabit?
Matthew begins not with a vision but with names. Kings and exiles. Saints and scandals. Tamar. Rahab. Ruth. The wife of Uriah. The genealogy is not cleaned up for feast-day reading. God writes salvation through real households, including the ones we would rather omit.
Then the line arrives at Joseph, husband of Mary. The child is conceived by the Holy Spirit. Joseph’s first plan is quiet withdrawal—righteous, careful, and still too small for what God is doing. The angel does not shame him. The angel names him: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid.” Righteousness is not distance from mystery. Righteousness is taking Mary—and the Child—into his home.
On this Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Church dares to celebrate a birthday in the middle of Ordinary Time. Mary’s birth is already a beginning of Emmanuel. Before she speaks a word, God is preparing a home in which He will be with us. The domestic church is asked the same question Joseph was asked: will we make room, or will we step back from what we cannot control?
Parents, build saint-forming homes. Pray over your spouse and children by name. Act in the power of the Holy Spirit by receiving the people—and the story—God has actually given you.
“The Gospel accounts understand the virginal conception of Jesus as a divine work that surpasses all human understanding and possibility: ‘That which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit,’ said the angel to Joseph about Mary his fiancée. The Church sees here the fulfillment of the divine promise given through the prophet Isaiah: ‘Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son.’” (CCC 497)

In My Heart: What part of my story have I decided is too stained for Emmanuel to enter?
In My Home: How can we receive one another the way Joseph was asked to receive Mary?
In My World: Whom is God asking us to take into our home—literally or spiritually—without fear?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around …
Name one person in your family line you are grateful God did not erase. Then pray over your spouse and each person by name, asking the Father to deepen their personal knowledge of His love, free them from every lie of the Enemy, strengthen them against temptation, and fill them with joyful, concrete living of the Gospel.
Daily Challenge:
Speak one word of belonging over your spouse or a child today: they are part of God’s story, not an interruption to it.

LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.
