GOSPEL | Matthew 26:14–25
One of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot,
went to the chief priests and said,
“What are you willing to give me
if I hand him over to you?”
They paid him thirty pieces of silver,
and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.
On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
the disciples approached Jesus and said,
“Where do you want us to prepare
for you to eat the Passover?”
He said,
“Go into the city to a certain man and tell him,
‘The teacher says, “My appointed time draws near;
in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples.”‘“
The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered,
and prepared the Passover.
When it was evening,
he reclined at table with the Twelve.
And while they were eating, he said,
“Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
Deeply distressed at this,
they began to say to him one after another,
“Surely it is not I, Lord?”
He said in reply,
“He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me
is the one who will betray me.
The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him,
but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.
It would be better for that man if he had never been born.”
Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply,
“Surely it is not I, Rabbi?”
He answered, “You have said so.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
The greatest danger is not opposition to Jesus—but a divided heart that stays near Him while turning away within.
Where in my life might I be close to Jesus externally but drifting from Him internally?
This Gospel reveals something deeply unsettling. Judas is not outside the circle. He is one of the Twelve. He has walked with Jesus, heard His teaching, witnessed miracles, and shared meals with Him. And yet, his heart has begun to turn.
The Greek verb used when Judas seeks to “hand him over” is paradidōmi—to deliver, to betray. It is the same word used later to describe Jesus handing Himself over in love. The contrast is stark. Judas hands Jesus over for gain. Jesus hands Himself over for salvation.
The price—thirty pieces of silver—is not random. It echoes Zechariah 11:12, where the shepherd of Israel is valued at the price of a slave. This moment fulfills prophecy, but it also exposes the tragic reality of a heart that has begun to value something else more than Christ.
At the table, Jesus announces the betrayal. What is remarkable is the response of the other disciples: “Surely it is not I, Lord?” They do not immediately accuse others. They examine themselves. This is the posture of a humble and vigilant heart.
Judas, however, responds differently. “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” Notice the difference. The others say “Lord.” Judas says “Rabbi”—teacher. It is a subtle but profound shift. He still respects Jesus, but he no longer surrenders to Him.
This is the danger for all of us.
We can remain near Jesus externally—going through the motions, saying the right things—while slowly allowing our hearts to drift. Small compromises. Hidden attachments. Unchecked habits. Over time, they create distance.
Family life is where this battle is most real. Parents are called not just to lead externally, but to guard their own hearts. Children quickly perceive authenticity. They see whether faith is alive—or merely routine.
The domestic church becomes strong when honesty and conversion are part of daily life. When we ask ourselves, “Surely it is not I, Lord?” and allow God to reveal what needs to change.
Parents, this Gospel calls you to spiritual vigilance. Do not allow hidden compromises to take root. Bring everything into the light. Pray over your children by name, asking the Holy Spirit to guard their hearts from deception and division. Teach them to examine themselves honestly and to return quickly to Jesus.
Judas walked close to Jesus—but chose something else.
You are being invited to choose Him fully.
“Sin is before all else an offense against God, a rupture of communion with him.” (CCC 1440)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Where might I be compromising or drifting away from full fidelity to Christ?

In My World: How can I help others remain faithful to Christ in a world full of distractions?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one way each person wants to grow closer to Jesus and remain faithful to Him.
Then pray together as a family. Parents, place your hands gently on each person and pray over them by name. Ask the Holy Spirit to guard their hearts from temptation and deception. Renounce any lies of the Enemy that draw them away from truth. Pray for courage to choose what is right, strength to resist sin, and joy in walking faithfully with Christ.
Daily Challenge: Take one concrete step today to remove a small compromise and choose fidelity to Jesus.
