GOSPEL | Mark 12:18-27
Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection,
came to Jesus and put this question to him, saying,
“Teacher, Moses wrote for us,
If someone’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child,
his brother must take the wife
and raise up descendants for his brother.
Now there were seven brothers.
The first married a woman and died, leaving no descendants.
So the second brother married her and died, leaving no descendants,
and the third likewise.
And the seven left no descendants.
Last of all the woman also died.
At the resurrection when they arise whose wife will she be?
For all seven had been married to her.”
Jesus said to them, “Are you not misled
because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
When they rise from the dead,
they neither marry nor are given in marriage,
but they are like the angels in heaven.
As for the dead being raised,
have you not read in the Book of Moses,
in the passage about the bush, how God told him,
I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob?
He is not God of the dead but of the living.
You are greatly misled.”

GOING DEEPER
The way we live today reveals what we truly believe about eternity.
How would your decisions change if you were absolutely convinced that death is not the end of the story?
The Sadducees approached Jesus with what they believed was a clever argument against the resurrection. They constructed an elaborate scenario meant to make eternal life seem ridiculous. Jesus responds by exposing the real problem: they did not know the Scriptures or the power of God. Their vision of reality was too small because their vision of God was too small.
That temptation remains with us. We may profess belief in eternal life, yet often live as though this world is all there is. We worry endlessly about comfort, status, possessions, schedules, and appearances while giving little thought to the destiny for which we were created. A life focused only on the temporary will eventually feel empty because the human heart was made for eternity.
Jesus teaches that Heaven is not merely an improved version of earthly life. God’s plans are far greater than our imagination can grasp. The resurrection is not the restoration of what was, but the fulfillment of what God intended from the beginning. We are destined not simply to survive death, but to share forever in the very life of God.
One of the most beautiful insights in today’s Gospel comes when Jesus points to the burning bush. God says, “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Not “I was.” The covenant endures. Relationship endures. Love endures. The Lord remains faithful to those who belong to Him. He is not the God of the dead but of the living.
Today’s memorial powerfully illustrates this truth. Saint Charles Lwanga and his companions chose fidelity to Christ over their own safety and lives. They faced martyrdom because they were convinced that earthly death was not their ultimate destiny. Their courage was rooted in resurrection hope. Eternity gave meaning to every sacrifice.
Our homes desperately need this perspective. Parents are not merely raising successful adults; we are helping form future saints. Spouses are not merely building a household; they are helping one another reach Heaven. Build saint-forming homes by speaking often about eternal life, praying over your spouse and children by name, and calling daily upon the Holy Spirit. The God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Charles Lwanga, and every saint is still the God of the living—and He desires your family to live in that hope today.
“Christian hope unfolds from the beginning of Jesus’ preaching in the proclamation of the beatitudes. The beatitudes raise our hope toward heaven as the new Promised Land; they trace the path that leads through the trials that await the disciples of Jesus.” (CCC 1820)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: What fear would lose its power if I trusted more deeply in the promise of eternal life?
In My Home: How can our family more intentionally keep Heaven before our eyes?
In My World: How can I bring hope to someone who is discouraged, grieving, or afraid?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one thing you are looking forward to in Heaven and why.
Then pray over each person by name. Thank God for creating them for eternal life. Pray that they know His love, reject every lie of the Enemy, persevere through trials, and grow in joyful confidence that Christ has conquered sin and death.
Daily Challenge: Reach out to someone who is grieving or discouraged and remind them of the hope we have in Christ.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
