GOD’S DECLARATION TO YOU TODAY
My commands are not burdens meant to restrict you, but pathways that lead you into the fullness of life.
INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Matthew 5:17–19
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.
I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.
Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,
not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter
will pass from the law,
until all things have taken place.
Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments
and teaches others to do so
will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven.
But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments
will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
God’s commands are not restrictions on love—they are the architecture that makes love possible.
What if the rules you resist are actually the path to the life you most desire?
Jesus speaks these words in the heart of the Sermon on the Mount, where He reveals the deepest meaning of God’s law. Some people assumed that the Messiah would sweep away the old commandments and replace them with something entirely new. Instead, Jesus says something surprising: He has not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it.
The word “fulfill” (plēroō in Greek) means to bring something to its complete meaning—to fill it to the brim. The law was never meant to be a mere list of religious obligations. It was always meant to form hearts capable of communion with God and one another. Jesus does not discard the commandments; He reveals their deepest purpose.
That is why He says that not even the smallest letter will pass away. The “smallest letter” refers to the Hebrew yod, the tiniest mark in the alphabet. Jesus is emphasizing that God’s design for human life is precise and intentional. Every commandment protects something sacred—our dignity, our relationships, our freedom to love.
Yet we live in a culture that often treats commandments as obstacles to happiness. The assumption is that freedom means writing our own rules. But anyone who has lived long enough knows that abandoning God’s design does not lead to freedom—it leads to confusion, wounded relationships, and spiritual fatigue.
Jesus reveals a different vision. Obedience is not the opposite of freedom; it is the pathway to it. Just as a musician must learn the structure of music before improvising beautifully, the human heart flourishes when it lives within the wisdom of God’s commands.
And notice the two words Jesus pairs together: obey and teach. Faith is not meant to remain private. When we live God’s commandments with integrity—especially within our families—we quietly teach others what life in Christ looks like.
The domestic church becomes the first school of discipleship. Children learn the beauty of God’s law not from lectures but from watching their parents live it with joy, humility, and consistency. When a family chooses honesty over convenience, fidelity over compromise, generosity over selfishness, something powerful is happening: the Gospel is being taught in real time.
Build saint-forming homes by honoring God’s commandments not as burdens but as gifts, pray over your spouse and children in the powerful name of Jesus that their hearts love what is good and reject what leads them away from life, and remember that the greatest teaching your family will ever receive is the witness of parents who live what they believe.
“The moral life is a spiritual worship… We offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, when we orient our lives according to the commandments and the charity of Christ.” (CCC 2031)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Is there a commandment of God that I tend to resist or rationalize away?
In My Home: What do my daily choices teach my family about the meaning of God’s law?
In My World: How might living God’s commandments with joy become a quiet witness to others?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one commandment or teaching of Jesus that has helped bring peace or direction to your life.
Then gently place your hand on each member of your family and pray over them by name—asking Jesus to give them wisdom to recognize truth, courage to follow it, and joy in living according to God’s beautiful design for their lives.
Daily Challenge: Choose one commandment or teaching of Jesus today and intentionally live it with renewed attention and gratitude.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10.
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
