Follow Me on the road to Jerusalem—greatness in My Kingdom is found in serving and giving your life in love.
INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Matthew 20:17-28
As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem,
he took the Twelve disciples aside by themselves,
and said to them on the way,
"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests
and the scribes,
and they will condemn him to death,
and hand him over to the Gentiles
to be mocked and scourged and crucified,
and he will be raised on the third day."
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons
and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.
He said to her, "What do you wish?"
She answered him,
"Command that these two sons of mine sit,
one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom."
Jesus said in reply,
"You do not know what you are asking.
Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?"
They said to him, "We can."
He replied,
"My chalice you will indeed drink,
but to sit at my right and at my left,
this is not mine to give
but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."
When the ten heard this,
they became indignant at the two brothers.
But Jesus summoned them and said,
"You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,
and the great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it shall not be so among you.
Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many."
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GO DEEPER
In the Kingdom of Christ, greatness kneels.
Jesus is walking toward Jerusalem. He knows exactly what waits for Him — betrayal, humiliation, scourging, crucifixion. The road climbs geographically, but spiritually it descends into suffering. And right on that road, while He speaks of the Cross, a request for prestige surfaces.
It is almost painfully human.
The mother of James and John wants security for her sons. A seat at the right. A seat at the left. Influence. Stability. Proximity to power. We understand this. We want good outcomes for our children. We want them to matter. We want them safe and positioned well.
But Jesus answers with a chalice.
In biblical language, the cup is destiny — often suffering assigned by God. To drink it is not to sip inconvenience. It is to embrace costly participation in divine mission. “Can you drink the chalice?” He asks.
They say, “We can.” Their confidence is earnest, but it has not yet been tested. We recognize that tone too. We say yes to following Christ — until the yes costs reputation, comfort, control.
The other ten bristle. Not because they reject ambition — but because they share it. Rivalry creeps even into holy spaces. Jesus gathers them and redefines everything. Among the Gentiles, rulers dominate. They impose. They display power. “It shall not be so among you.”
In His Kingdom, authority bends low.
The Greek word for servant evokes someone who waits tables. The word for slave goes further — one who belongs entirely to another. And Jesus does not merely teach this; He embodies it. He gives His life as ransom. Leadership is not self-expansion. It is self-donation.
This reshapes the domestic church completely. We are tempted to measure family success by grades, accolades, compliance, image. But children are not formed by our résumé. They are formed by our sacrifice. The late-night talk. The apology we offer. The consistent presence when we are tired.
Children rarely remember the titles we held. They remember whether we knelt.
Ambition seeks position. Love seeks persons.
The Cross is not a detour from greatness. It is the doorway to it.
Build saint-forming homes by redefining greatness as daily, sacrificial love, pray over your children by name that their hearts are freed from the illusion of status and anchored in service, and act boldly in the power of the Holy Spirit — because every hidden act of self-gift is shaping eternal glory.
“The Son of Man ‘came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’” (CCC 440)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: Where am I seeking recognition more than faithfulness?
In My Home: How can I model servant leadership more concretely?
In My World: What opportunity do I have today to serve without applause?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around, share one way you can serve someone else in your family this week.
Then pray together aloud. As parents, place a hand on each person and pray over them by name, asking that they know God’s love personally, be freed from the Enemy’s lies that equate greatness with status, be strengthened to overcome selfish ambition, and be filled with joy in humble service.
Daily Challenge: Perform one deliberate act of service today that costs you time or comfort.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
