GOD’S DECLARATION TO YOU TODAY
Afraid of what surrender costs? Consider what your heart was made to hold.
INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Luke 14:25-33
Great crowds were traveling with Jesus,
and he turned and addressed them,
“If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother,
wife and children, brothers and sisters,
and even his own life,
he cannot be my disciple.
Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me
cannot be my disciple.
Which of you wishing to construct a tower
does not first sit down and calculate the cost
to see if there is enough for its completion?
Otherwise, after laying the foundation
and finding himself unable to finish the work
the onlookers should laugh at him and say,
‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’
Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down
and decide whether with ten thousand troops
he can successfully oppose another king
advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops?
But if not, while he is still far away,
he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms.
In the same way,
everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions
cannot be my disciple.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
Giving Christ first place allows His love to reorder everything else we hold dear.
What are you afraid Jesus might ask you to release if you let Him draw closer?
A great crowd is traveling with Jesus. Then He turns and speaks words that make casual enthusiasm difficult to sustain. Following Him will reach into relationships, possessions, and even the instinct to preserve our own lives. We may prefer a faith that offers encouragement while leaving our deepest arrangements undisturbed. Jesus loves us too completely to leave those arrangements beyond the reach of His truth.
His language about hating family is deliberately arresting. Read within His teaching to love our neighbor and honor our parents, it expresses the uncompromising priority of discipleship. Even our closest relationships cannot claim the allegiance that belongs to God. That priority can purify family love: we learn to seek another person’s true good without making their approval the measure of our faithfulness.
The tower builder and the king both sit down to reckon with reality. Jesus asks us to consider what following Him entails, including the surrender of possessions. This reaches beyond an occasional donation into our claim to determine how everything will be used. We can possess something responsibly while allowing God to direct its purpose. The harder surrender often concerns the inward insistence that our comfort, plans, and preferences must remain protected.
We feel that struggle when we imagine intimacy with God as a beautiful addition to a life we still intend to control. Yet we were created for communion with Him, and Christ gives us access to His own life. Prayer brings our resistance into that relationship. We can say, “Jesus, I want to follow You, and this is where I am afraid.” His grace meets us there and makes a faithful response possible.
For us as parents, the home is the domestic church, where putting Christ first must deepen our responsibility to one another. It may require refusing dishonest work that would increase our income, accepting a child’s faithful vocation despite our preferences, or relinquishing the need to win every disagreement. Today’s Saint Charles Borromeo reminds us that holiness includes the responsibilities of a particular calling. Our cross may involve doing a necessary good at a real personal cost. Love matures when it can give without retaining control of the outcome.
Build saint-forming homes by placing your relationships, resources, and plans under Christ’s loving authority; pray over your spouse and children by name, asking for freedom to follow Him wholeheartedly; act in the power of the Holy Spirit by surrendering one attachment that has been interfering with a clear responsibility or faithful choice.
“The precept of detachment from riches is obligatory for entrance into the Kingdom of heaven.” (CCC 2544)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: What condition have I quietly attached to my willingness to follow Jesus?
In My Home: Where does my desire for approval or control interfere with loving my family faithfully?
In My World: What possession, advantage, or ambition needs to become more available to God’s purposes?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around … invite each person to name something good that requires practice, sacrifice, or perseverance. Discuss how accepting a real cost can help us grow in love.
Then pray over each person by name: “Lord Jesus, help [Name] personally know the love with which You call them. Free them from the Enemy’s lies that surrender to You will leave them without what they truly need. Strengthen them to overcome temptation, especially selfishness, compromise, and fear of disapproval. Holy Spirit, give them joy in living the Gospel through generous sharing, courageous obedience, and faithful care for others. Amen.”
Daily Challenge: Give up one personal preference today to fulfill a responsibility with a willing heart.
DAILY PARENT & GRANDPARENT BLESSING
LORD JESUS CHRIST, let Your holy anointing be upon each of our children, grandchildren, and godchildren this day and week, including all to whom they are called in vocation, and all future generations! In Your Sacred Name we claim them for You! We renounce all whispers, lies, and influences of the Enemy! We pray right now that each know Your loving Presence, be forged in virtue, and be flooded with an abundance of Your Holy Spirit to live fully their identity and mission in You now and through all eternity, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! Amen.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
