GOD’S DECLARATION TO YOU TODAY
I have called you. Keep your hand on the plow. I am worth the unhoused road.
INVOCATION
Come, Holy Spirit! Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, open my heart to hear and receive all that You desire for me. Draw me ever more deeply into the Love and Life of the Blessed Trinity!
GOSPEL | Luke 9:57-62
As Jesus and his disciples were proceeding
on their journey, someone said to him,
“I will follow you wherever you go.”
Jesus answered him,
“Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests,
but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.”
And to another he said, “Follow me.”
But he replied, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.”
But he answered him,
“Let the dead bury their dead.
But you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God.”
And another said, “I will follow you, Lord,
but first let me say farewell to my family at home.”
Jesus answered him,
“No one who sets a hand to the plow
and looks to what was left behind
is fit for the Kingdom of God.”
EVERY DAY QUESTION
What struck you? Challenged you? Inspired you? What questions did it raise?
GOING DEEPER
The Lord is not hunting for better speeches about following. He is hunting for an undivided yes.
Where has “I will follow you” been quietly followed by “but first”?
Three voices meet Him on the road. The first offers a wide promise: wherever You go. Jesus answers with homelessness. Foxes have dens. Birds have nests. The Son of Man has no place to lay His head. If you follow Him, you follow a love that will not first secure the nest.
The second man receives the call—“Follow me”—and answers with a duty no Jew would take lightly: bury my father. Jesus is not mocking grief. He is naming a delay that can last a lifetime. “Let the dead bury their dead” is a jolt so that the living will go now and proclaim the Kingdom.
The third already has the Lord’s name on his lips, then adds the most familiar stall in family life: but first. A plowman who keeps glancing over his shoulder cuts a crooked furrow. Looking back is not remembering those you love. It is trying to follow Jesus with one foot still in the old field.
Saint Jerome knew that cost in his bones. A fierce, learned, sometimes difficult man, he left reputation and comfort to sit with the Word until it yielded Scripture in the Church’s mouth. He did not treat the sacred page as a hobby for later. He put his hand to the plow of the text and stayed. On his feast, the same Lord is asking whether our homes will keep glancing backward—or go.
You are not being told that family is nothing. You are being told that Jesus is first. The One with nowhere to rest His head has already made room for you in the Kingdom. That is why He can ask for the whole road.
Parents, build saint-forming homes. Pray over your spouse and children by name. Act in the power of the Holy Spirit by dropping one “but first” today and taking the next step after Him.
“Family ties are important but not absolute. Just as the child grows to maturity and human and spiritual autonomy, so his unique vocation which comes from God asserts itself more clearly and forcefully. Parents should respect this call and encourage their children to follow it. They must be convinced that the first vocation of the Christian is to follow Jesus.” (CCC 2232)
LIFE APPLICATION QUESTIONS
In My Heart: What “but first” keeps interrupting a call I already understand?
In My Home: Do we teach following Jesus as a nest we protect, or as a road we walk together?
In My World: Where is the Kingdom waiting to be proclaimed while I keep looking behind me?
FAMILY LIVE IT
Make some time today to gather together and, going around …
Name one delay you are ready to release so you can follow more simply. Then pray over your spouse and each person by name, asking the Father to deepen their personal knowledge of His love, free them from every lie of the Enemy, strengthen them against temptation, and fill them with joyful, concrete living of the Gospel.
Daily Challenge:
Do the next faithful thing today without first arranging a more comfortable version of it.

GOING VERTICAL
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Just as the vertical beam upholds the horizontal beam of the Cross, so too does undistracted, dedicated daily turning to God as our lifeblood uphold and strengthen every part of life. Start with just three minutes. Wait patiently for the breakthrough beyond the noise. Let Him speak.
